The invention concerns a superconducting magnet configuration for a high resolution NMR spectrometer which is highly stable over time and having a cryostat (21) with a vertical room temperature bore (23). A transverse access (32) through the cryostat (21) to the room temperature bore (23) is provided for at an easily accessible height directly above the upper end of the superconducting magnet coil (25) to substantially simplify the introduction of a sample. In a system having two helium tanks (26, 27), it is advantageous to have the access (32) arranged between these helium tanks.

A tank closure (14) has first and second parts (60,62) which are friction welded to each other. The first part (60) of the tank closure (14) is formed of steel, and includes a rupturable closure wall (20). The second part (62) of the tank closure (14) is formed of aluminum or an aluminum alloy, and has a fluid flow conduit (64) communicating the closure wall (20) with an outlet opening (22).

A gas tank valve and yoke for mounting gas passaging structure on the valve in which a gas tank valve stem and yoke set screw are both adapted to be engaged by a single wrench. The same wrench turns the valve stem to open and close the gas tank valve, and turns the set screw into secure engagement with the gas tank valve to hold the yoke in a fixed, self-retaining position on the valve. A torque rod is connected to the outer end portion of the set screw for conjoint rotational movement with the set screw about the longitudinal axis of the set screw for turning the set screw. Pin and hole arrangements on the yoke and valve body are provided to discriminate against using an undesired gas or gas passaging structure.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for charging fluids to elongated pressure containers, such as inflators for airbag passive restraint systems is described. The disclosed method and apparatus enables the container to be filled from the side rather than from the end. The charging of more than one fluid to different chambers in the container is also facilitated, either by enabling two charges to be conducted simultaneously, or by allowing the two charges to be conducted through a single fill port.

A pressure vessel (10) includes a tank (12) and a closure structure (14) with a breakaway part (90) exposed to fluid pressure in the tank (12). The breakaway part (90) is severable from the closure structure (14) for movement outward from the tank (12) under the influence of elevated fluid pressure. The pressure vessel (10) further includes a probe (144) which moves forcefully against and through the closure structure (14) to puncture a hole (210) through the breakaway part (90). The probe (144) guides the breakaway part (90) to move outward from the tank (12) telescopically over the probe (144) under the influence of the elevated fluid pressure.

A ceramic composite is provided comprising ceramic fibers and microparticles bound together as a porous matrix with a ceramic binder. The ceramic composite is particularly useful for transporting cryogenic fluids.
Abstract:
Extraction of a fluent material from a pressurized system containing same such as CFC for reclamation is effected into a container by reducing the temperature of the container to a sufficiently cold temperature to generate a vacuum within the container sufficient to extract the CFC from the system to be extracted. The container is cooled by placing the container into an insulated drum containing a glycol bath within which is provided an evaporator duct shaped with a plurality of separate duct portions lying in horizontal planes and spaced vertically with each portion interconnected to the next by a vertical section of the duct. Into the duct is injected carbon dioxide from a compressed liquid supply which is passed through a metering orifice tuned to the length and shape of the duct so that evaporation takes place by the end of the duct. Any liquid remaining at the end of the duct as the temperature cools is returned by a diverter valve into the gylcol bath for additional cooling effect.

Method and apparatus to contain dangerous gases venting or leaking from a primary containment vessel. An outer containment vessel holds the primary containment vessel in fluid tight relationship to the outer vessel. The outer vessel has an internal volume large enough to contain the entire contents of the inner vessel and includes means to absorb or scrub gas leaking from the inner vessel. Removal of gas from the inner vessel to a point of use is controlled by valves and conduits contained in the outer vessel, the valves being controlled from outside the vessels.
Abstract:
The invention provides a vent cap for automatically discharging a gas container such as a propane cylinder. The vent cap includes threads for securing the vent cap to the neck of the gas container. The vent cap further includes an indicator which has a pin and a button. When the button is manually depressed, the pin engages the valve stem of the check valve which seals the gas container, discharging gas from the container. The button includes a flexible, radially curved central portion which provides oil can action when the indicator is moved between the up position and the down position. A geometrical configuration of the central portion may be adjusted to vary the gas pressure threshold at which the indicator will remain in the down position to automatically discharge a nearly empty gas container.

Inflatable rubber dinghies, familiar around most wharf areas, are made safe for scuba tank users by a plurality of interlocking rigid base sections which insert laterally across the floor of the dinghy and over both inflatable side tubes of the dinghy. Each base section includes a support for holding a scuba tank in an upright position and each such support is secured to a rail, running front-to-back along the axis of the dinghy, to which the base sections are secured. The interlocking inserts not only provide for secure transport of the scuba tanks but do so in a way which occupies little space and provides for increased stability for the dinghy.
