According to the present invention, there is provided a method of forming a composite material comprising nanotubes oriented in a matrix comprising a ceramic material, the method comprising the steps of: providing an array of substantially aligned nanotubes; providing a ceramic matrix material in the form of a solution; applying the solution to the nanotubes; allowing the solution to infiltrate into the array of nanotubes; and sintering the ceramic matrix material to form the composite material, wherein the nanotubes are substantially aligned in the ceramic matrix. Composite materials obtainable by said method are also provided.

Method for preparing a composite comprising a fibre reinforcement and a glass-ceramic matrix essentially consisting of lithium aluminosilicate (LAS), the said method comprising the following successive steps: a) preparation of a sol of precursors of the matrix, comprising a lithium salt, a reactive binder containing alumina, colloidal silica and a solvent, and homogenization of the said sol; b) impregnation of the fibre reinforcement with the sol prepared in step a); c) drying of the impregnated fibre reinforcement, by means of which a gelled composite comprising a fibre reinforcement and a gelled matrix is obtained; and d) densification of the gelled composite of step c) at a temperature not exceeding 500° C.

A gel-fiber glass (GFG) is a newly-formed sol-gel glass polymerized from tetramethoxysilane on the surface of activated glass wool fibers or activated fibrous glass. GFG is a support for trapped chemical or biochemical reagents. A thin layer of reagents trapped in gel glass during its preparation is present on the surface of a lattice of glass fibers. Columns for affinity chromatography were prepared from the GFG membranes with entrapped antigens or antibodies and were used to isolate different proteins, including tumor-associated antigens; GFG membrane demonstrated high effectiveness and stability, and can isolate proteins in extremely high amounts. The membranes can be used in diagnostic practice, generation of specific antibodies and therapy.

The ceramic also provides protection from atmospheric deterioration of the superconductive oxide.

Synthesis of fullerene/glass composites. A direct method for preparing solid solutions of C.sub.60 in silicon dioxide (SiO.sub.2) glass matrices by means of sol-gel chemistry is described. In order to produce highly concentrated fullerene-sol-gel-composites it is necessary to increase the solubility of these "guests" in a delivery solvent which is compatible with the starter sol (receiving solvent). Sonication results in aggregate disruption by treatment with high frequency sound waves, thereby accelerating the rate of hydrolysis of the alkoxide precursor, and the solution process for the C.sub.60. Depending upon the preparative procedure, C.sub.60 dispersed within the glass matrix as microcrystalline domains, or dispersed as true molecular solutions of C.sub.60 in a solid glass matrix, is generated by the present method.

The invention concerns a composit material with a glass-ceramic or ceramic matrix obtained by the sol-gel process and reinforced by fibers, wherein said matrix is MLAS matrix and wherein said fibers are at least 17% by volume Si-Ti-C-O fibers. FIG. 2 shows the flexural stress-strain curves (compression and tension) for a composite material containing 24% by volume of Si-Ti-C-O fiber in a MLAS matrix. Shaped articles produced from the composit material according to this invention can be used in the aeronautical and spatial industries and in motor vehicle engines.
