    Abstract: A method and apparatus for filtering a fluid is presented. In one embodiment, the apparatus converts contaminated water into water having a lower turbidity and bacterial contamination level than the contaminated water. The apparatus includes an inlet for supplying a batch of water to the settling unit; a roughing separator unit; a filter unit having a filtration media; wherein the filtration media comprises sand, anthracite coal, burnt rice husks, diatomaceous earth, gravel, pumice gravel, or combinations thereof; a sanitation unit; wherein the sanitation unit is an ultraviolet disinfection unit; a backwash unit; wherein the inlet is in fluid communications with the settling unit, the settling unit is in fluid communications with the filter unit and the backwash unit, the backwash unit is in fluid communications with the filter unit, and the filter unit is in fluid communications with the sanitation unit; and wherein at least the inlet and a portion of the settling unit is elevated above a filter unit inlet and a filter unit outlet.

    Abstract: Wastewater is treated on at least one apparatus positioned at a location on the surface of a body of seawater wherein a wastewater intake system takes in wastewater into the apparatus, the wastewater is treated on the apparatus to yield treated wastewater and sludge, and the treated wastewater and/or sludge is diluted with seawater prior to being discharged into the body of seawater. The wastewater treatment systems and methods can also be combined with desalination and/or power generation. In combination with desalination, the concentrate produced from the desalination process is mixed with treated wastewater or sludge prior to discharge to bring the resulting mixture to a salt concentration closer to the body of seawater than the unmixed concentrate, treated wastewater, or sludge. Combustible gases produced by the wastewater treatment process can be used to fuel a power generation system that can be used to produce electrical power for use by systems on the apparatus or transferred off the apparatus for other uses.

    Abstract: It has been discovered that a mechanical flotation system having only two cells can be nearly as efficient as one having more cells, yet provide an apparatus with a considerably smaller footprint, significantly reduced capital and operating costs, as well as be resistant to floating oil recovery platform wave effects. The dual-cell mechanical flotation system has, in sequential order, an inlet chamber and two gasification chambers or cells, each with at least one gas ingestion and mixing mechanism, and a discharge chamber. A common primary skim collection channel atop the partition dividing the gasification chambers efficiently channels away the bulk of the floating collected matter. At least one baffle depending from the top of the vessel near the primary skim collection channel helps dampen the action of the fluid containing the suspended matter when the vessel is affected by wave motion against the floating oil production platform.

    Abstract: There is provided waste treatment apparatus generally indicated as 10 and comprising a moulded plastic tank portion 11 forming an electrolysis chamber 13 and a holding chamber 14 separated by a bulkhead 15. The tanks are mutually closed at their tops by tank top 16 which closes over the bulkhead 15 to form substantially isolated spaces in the respective tanks. The electrolysis chamber 13 receives waste entrained in sea water from a macerating marine toilet (not shown) via a waste inlet 17 disposed at the upper portion of the electrolysis chamber 13. A displacement tube 20 picks up waste from the bottom of the electrolysis chamber 13 and discharges to the top of the holding chamber 14. A series of ruthenium/iridium oxide coated titanium electrode pairs 21 are disposed generally vertically to encourage vertical column circulation in the electrolysis chamber by virtue of the action of outgassed electrolysis products. A float transducer 23 provides holding chamber level data to the controller 22 which controls the operation of a discharge pump 26 adapted to selectively empty the holding chamber 14.

    Abstract: Disclosed are waste processing systems capable of being used on-board a transport such as a train, bus, airplane, boat, or other similar vehicles. The liquid waste is evaporated and condensed primarily as water vapor. The resulting liquid may be safely discharged in most places without adverse environmental and health effects. If desired, the liquid can be stored and reused for non-potable applications such as toilet flushing. The solid waste is converted to inert ash or carbon and may be either stored in a filter or discharged as carbon or ash into the water, air, or onto the railroad tracks. The system may also be used in stationary or semi-stationary applications where on-site treatment of waste may be desired.

    Abstract: Wastewater, particularly black and gray water, produced in macerating human waste, is now treated to provide reduced total suspended solids. The wastewater includes a liquid media comprising salt-containing substance such as brine or seawater. The wastewater is electrolytically treated. In the treatment the electrolysis cell contains an anode that has a surface coating including tin dioxide. During electrolysis, the cell will produce hypochlorite while also reducing BOD and residual chlorine discharge.
