A polymeric composition which reduces the loss of flowability of a cementitious composition comprises at least one polymer as a salt thereof having the form of a copolymer of(a) a maleic anhydride half-ester with a compound of the formula IRO(AO).sub.m H (I) where R is a C.sub.1-20 alkyl group, A is a C.sub.2-4 alkylene group and m is an integer from 2-16; and(b) a monomer having the formula IICH.sub.2 .dbd.CHCH.sub.2 -(OA).sub.n OR (II) where n is an integer from 1-90.In a preferred embodiment, there is present a polycarboxylate salt which is at least one polymer or copolymer comprising at least one of the monomers acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic anhydride, maleic acid and maleic acid monoester, polymer and polycarboxylate salt being blended in the proportion of 0.1-10 parts of weight of polymer per part of polycarboxylate salt.Cementitious compositions such as concrete in which such polymeric compositions are included maintain their slump properties.

Spreadable thixotropic coating composition suitable for rust removal and containing polyvinylpyrrolidone, water and a thixotropic agent which is either xanthan gum or water-soluble crosslinked interpolymer of maleic anhydride, monovinyl alkyl ether and crosslinking agent. The composition has a pH between about 1.5 and 7.0 is applied to rusty metal surfaces and allowed to dry. During drying the rust becomes incorporated into the coating which is then easily removed.

A thixotropic aqueous medium of this invention is uniquely adapted for use as a hydraulic fluid in well-drilling operations and in secondary oil and gas recovery from subterranean formations.

An improved anhydrous denture adhesive is prepared to contain a mixture of a cationic polymeric material and a synthetic anionic gum material as the adhesive ingredient. The mixture may be formulated as a powder or anhydrous paste, which, when applied to dentures and exposed to moisture, develops superior adhesive properties. Suitable cationic materials include at least one of the following: copolymers of substituted or unsubstituted acrylamide with vinyl quaternary ammonium salts, and copolymers of substituted or unsubstituted acrylamide with vinyl and alkyl substituted vinyl pyridinium salts. As the anionic component there may be used at least one synthetic gum which is a copolymer of maleic acid with vinly-lower alkyl-ethers.
