A ballast circuit system provides for efficient starting and operation of high voltage discharge lamps using a common 120 volt AC power source. As a result of this improved ballast circuit system, the necessary high voltage is generated from a normal 120 volt AC in such a way that there is low power loss. The system efficiency allows for use of plastic fixtures and small size packaging of the discharge lamp.

Provided is a fluorescence reader that uses two excitation channels and can read up to seven different fluorescent dyes in a single run. Each excitation channel has one light source and one single excitation filter and one dichroic mirror. One excitation channel is capable of exciting multiple fluorescent dyes and can be used to distinguish multiple dyes in combination with multiple emission filters. The excitation channels are driven by a motor that can automatically switch the two excitation channels for taking images of up to seven different fluorescent dyes. An algorithm to calibrate the crosstalk between different fluorescent dyes is also provided. Also provided is a method for analyzing digital PCR data using a ratio of two fluorescence emission readings.

A frequency diverse phased-array antenna operates simultaneously in two bands. A checkerboard of antenna elements for a first wavelength is offset with a second checkerboard of second antenna elements. Within the substrate is a three dimensional checkerboard of ground planes and ground walls which provide signal isolation between the bands. Multiple ground planes optimize operation at the several frequencies. Phased-array elements are isolated by a conductive wall in a multi-layer substrate. Orthogonal polarization of antenna patches further improve signal discrimination. Below the surface layer, another conductive wall isolates each quadrature hybrid. The conductive wall can be realized by metal vias or metal mesh infused through a dielectric and surrounding a raised ground plane to isolate electrical fields at each frequency. A conductive wall also provides quadrature hybrid isolation.

Disclosed are devices that can perform multiple independent digital PCRs with real time monitoring capability. The device comprises multiple PCR mini-reactors thermally coupled with its own temperature control element, a detection unit, and a motorized platform for holding and moving the PCR mini-reactors. The real time digital PCR device can simultaneously perform multiple digital PCRs, generate amplification curves of thousands and millions of individual PCR processes, evaluate binary readouts based on the amplification curves, and identify different target sequences based on the amplification curves. Methods of using the real time digital PCR device to detect target nucleic acid and count circulating tumor cells are also disclosed.

An electrode comprises an acid treated, cathodically cycled carbon-comprising film or body. The carbon consists of single walled nanotubes (SWNTs), pyrolytic graphite, microcrystalline graphitic, any carbon that consists of more than 99% sp2 hybridized carbons, or any combination thereof. The electrode can be used in an electrochemical device functioning as an electrolyzer for evolution of hydrogen or as a fuel cell for oxidation of hydrogen. The electrochemical device can be coupled as a secondary energy generator into a system with a primary energy generator that naturally undergoes generation fluctuations. During periods of high energy output, the primary source can power the electrochemical device to store energy as hydrogen, which can be consumed to generate electricity as the secondary source during low energy output by the primary source. Solar cells, wind turbines and water turbines can act as the primary energy source.

A method and a device for maintaining a Long Term Evolution (LTE) base station are provided by the embodiments of the present invention. Depending on the LTE access network system and air interface characteristics, by making a few processing flow changes in such mode or method, a wireless communication link is established between a network maintenance device and a base station to implement the base station maintenance and data communication. Application of the technical solutions provided by the embodiments of the present invention can implement the base station maintenance and data communication by the wireless mode, reduce the cost of the network maintenance and prevent the destruction and influence of human factors on the operation and maintenance of the base station.
