Various aspects described herein relate to distinguishing frequency shift keying (FSK) signals transmitted by each user of multiple users in a wireless communications system. One or more symbols for transmitting in an FSK-modulated signal can be obtained by a user. The one or more symbols can be encoded based on a tone location assignment corresponding to a unique spreading code associated with the user. Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and/or phase-shift keying (PSK) can be performed over at least one tone associated with the encoded symbols. Each user can transmit the encoded symbols to a receiving entity, where the receiving entity can decode each symbol received from the plurality of users to produce a distinguishable symbol for each user based on the unique spreading codes associated with each user.

A system and method are disclosed that may provide an accurate estimate of an AP's available capacity. The AP may simulate medium access contention operations using actual packets being transmitted from the AP to associated STAs and virtual packets indicative of traffic that would be transmitted to a new STA that is not currently associated with AP. The AP may determine a transmission schedule for the actual packets and virtual packets based on the simulated medium access contention operations, and then determine what portion of the available capacity is allocated to the virtual packets based, at least in part, on the transmission schedule.

The metrics may be related to one or more of efficiency, service charge, service subscription, application type, or buffer size. In one design, switching priorities of the UE for the plurality of wireless systems may be determined based on the metrics and may be used to determine whether to switch the UE.

A timing schedule specific to the network to transmit keep-alive messages to refresh each persistent connection of the plurality of persistent connections is identified. A generation of the keep-alive messages for each persistent connection of the plurality of persistent connections is synchronized. The synchronized generation of the keep-alive messages occurs according to the identified timing schedule of the network.

An end of burst indicator may be provided with the wideband BWP communications that indicates a timing for switching from the wideband BWP to the narrowband BWP. The end of burst indicator may be provided prior to a last downlink shared channel communication of the communications burst, and the UE may switch to the narrowband BWP upon completion of the last downlink shared channel communication. The UE may switch from the narrowband BWP to the wideband BWP for a subsequent communications burst autonomously or based on an explicit indication.
