Abstract: Methods and devices for simplifying data collected from assets are provided. An example method involves obtaining raw data from a data source at an asset, determining that a data logging trigger is satisfied by determining that a recently obtained point in the raw data differs from a corresponding predicted point predicted by extrapolation based on previously saved points included in one or more previously generated simplified sets of data by an amount of extrapolation error that is limited by an upper bound that is fixed as the raw data is collected over time, and, when the data logging trigger is satisfied, performing a dataset simplification algorithm on the raw data to generate a simplified set of data.

Abstract: Systems and methods for controlling audio output in a telematics system are provided. In on method a telematics device determines that a parameter has exceeded a first threshold and sends an automatic volume control trigger message to an audio output device. The telematics device determines that a second parameter has exceeded a second threshold and sends an alert message to the audio output device. The audio output device performs an automatic volume control procedure then plays back and audible alert message.

Abstract: A method and a system for impact detection in a stationary vehicle are provided. The method includes putting a telematics device into a sleep mode and performing a first micro wakeup. In response to determining that a first value read from a sensor during the micro wakeup is greater than a noise threshold, increasing a frequency of the micro wakeups and a sampling rate of the sensor. The method also includes reading a second value from the sensor during a second wakeup, performing a regular wakeup, and sending the first and second values during the regular wakeup.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for analyzing health of vehicle batteries and vehicle electrical systems. Vehicle batteries, as well as other components of a vehicle electrical system, tend to degrade over time, and eventually fail. The described systems and methods generate an electrical system metric based on electrical data from a plurality of vehicles. Electrical system performance of individual vehicles is compared to the generated electrical system metric, to determine electrical system performance of vehicles relative to other similar vehicles.

Abstract: Systems and methods for restricting the use of vehicle operator's electronic device are provided. In a method a telematics server determines that a vehicle's engine is running, and that the operator registered with the vehicle is in the driver's seat. In response, the telematics server sends a message to the vehicle operator's terminal for changing the configuration thereof. A system including a telematics device, telematics server, and operator terminal may carry out the method. The system and method can be used to restrict the use of electronic devices by drivers sitting in a vehicle with the engine running in accordance with laws in certain jurisdictions.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to systems, devices, and methods for analyzing health of vehicle batteries. Vehicle batteries tend to degrade over time. The described systems, devices, and methods quantify this degradation (or quantify remaining health of the battery) by comparing average energy used to charge or discharge the battery by a charge level unit to a nominal quantity of energy used to charge or discharge a battery in optimal health by a charge level unit. Charge data for previous charge events of the vehicle battery can be used in the calculation, and can be filtered by identifying qualified charge events based on at least one of a number of metrics. Usage data for previous usage events of the vehicle battery can be used in the calculation, and can be filtered by identifying qualified usage events or subgroups of usage event based on at least one of a number of metrics.

Abstract: Methods and devices for asset tracking are provided. An example method involves obtaining a stream of raw data, adding data points from the stream of raw data to a data buffer in a first cycle of data, performing a dataset simplification algorithm on the first cycle of data to determine whether one or more data points from the first cycle of data are to be recorded, preparing the data buffer for a second cycle of data, including determining a group of carry-over data points to be included in the second cycle of data, and continuing to add data points from the stream of raw data to the data buffer in the second cycle of data.
