Abstract: A material, a process for forming a biocidal material, and an article of manufacture. The material includes a particle and first and second functionalities bound to first and second faces of the particle. At least one of the first and second functionalities are biocides. The process includes forming colloidosomes having particles with exposed first faces partially embedded in a wax droplet. The process also includes selecting first and second functionalities, wherein at least one of the first and second functionalities are biocides, and binding the first functionalities to the first faces of the particles. Further, the process includes removing the particles from the colloidosome, and binding the second functionalities to the second faces. The article of manufacture includes a polymer matrix, particles, first functionalities bound to first faces of the particles, and second functionalities bound to second faces of the particles.

Abstract: A secured device includes an electronic component and a protective cover surrounding the electronic component. The secured device also includes one or more chemiluminescent reactant layers and a light sensor that is electrically connected to the electronic component. The one or more chemiluminescent reactant layers are disposed between the protective cover and the electronic component and include multiple reactants that undergo a chemiluminescent reaction. The light sensor is configured to trigger one or more tamper response operations responsive to detection of a photon generated by the chemiluminescent reaction.

Abstract: Methods and systems for detecting environmental contaminants is described. In an embodiment, a method includes macerating and extracting a sample; reacting a first polymerizable compound with the sample to form a second mixture comprising a second polymerizable compound; adding an initiator to the second mixture comprising the second polymerizable compound; performing a polymerization reaction on the second mixture comprising the second polymerizable compound to form a third mixture comprising a precipitate; and performing a turbidimetric analysis on the third mixture comprising the precipitate. In another embodiment, a method includes macerating and extracting a sample; reacting a first mixture comprising the functionalized polythiophene compound and the sample to form a second mixture comprising a second functionalized polythiophene compound; performing a colorimetric analysis on the second mixture comprising the second functionalized polythiophene compound.

Abstract: A wearable electronic device may alert a wearer as to a presence of either a range of allergens or to specific pollen to which the individual is allergic. As such, the device may warn the user of bioparticles likely to affect them allergenically. The device may include an airflow path. A deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) array may be positioned within the airflow path to capture bioparticles of a particular size. An imaging device may capture images of captured bioparticles. The system may include a database of bioparticles in a range of sizes. The system may be configured to compare the captured bioparticles to the information in the database. A wearer may be alerted if bioparticles potentially allergenically problematic to the person have been found in the captured bioparticles.

Abstract: A conformal coating composition for protecting a metal surface from sulfur related corrosion includes a polymer and metal nanoparticles blended with the polymer. In accordance with some embodiments of the present invention, an apparatus includes an electronic component mounted on a substrate, metal conductors electronically connecting the electronic component, and a polymer conformal coating containing metal nanoparticles overlying the metal conductors. Accordingly, the metal nanoparticle-containing conformal coating is able to protect the metal conductors from corrosion caused by sulfur components (e.g., elemental sulfur, hydrogen sulfide, and/or sulfur oxides) in the air. That is, the metal nanoparticles in the conformal coating react with any corrosion inducing sulfur component in the air and prevent the sulfur component from reacting with the underlying metal conductors.

Abstract: A flame-retardant compound, a process for forming a flame-retardant compound, and an article of manufacture comprising a material containing a flame-retardant polyetheretherketone based polymer are disclosed. The flame-retardant compound includes two or more polyetheretherketone polymer chains and at least one flame-retardant aryl diamine cross-linker moiety, wherein the flame-retardant aryl diamine cross-linker moiety contains at least one flame-retardant functional group. The process includes selecting a flame-retardant aryl diamine, wherein the flame-retardant aryl diamine contains at least one flame-retardant functional group, selecting a polyetheretherketone polymer, and reacting the flame-retardant aryl diamine with the polyetheretherketone polymer to form a flame-retardant polyetheretherketone based polymer having flame-retardant aryl diamine cross-linkers, wherein the flame-retardant aryl diamine cross-linkers contain the at least one flame-retardant functional group. The article of manufacture includes a material containing a flame-retardant polyetheretherketone based polymer having flame-retardant aryl diamine cross-linkers.

Abstract: A levoglucosan-based flame retardant compound, a process for forming a flame retardant polymer, and an article of manufacture comprising a polymer that contains the levoglucosan-based flame retardant compound. The levoglucosan-based flame retardant compound has phosphorus-based flame retardant functional groups. At least one of the phosphorus-based flame retardant groups includes a phenyl substituent. The process for forming the flame retardant polymer includes providing a phosphorus-based flame retardant molecule, providing levoglucosan, chemically reacting the phosphorus-based flame retardant molecule and the levoglucosan derivative to form a levoglucosan-based flame retardant compound, and incorporating the levoglucosan-based flame retardant compound into a polymer by covalent binding to form the levoglucosan-based flame retardant polymer.

The method also includes determining a particular set of operations to be performed at the computing device based on a result of the comparison.

The process for forming the flame retardant polymer includes obtaining pinene, forming a derivative of pinene, obtaining a phosphorus-based compound, reacting the phosphorus-based compound and the pinene derivative to form a pinene-based flame retardant compound, and incorporating the pinene-based flame retardant compound into a polymer to form the pinene-based flame retardant polymer.
