Abstract:
Polymerization processes and polymers formed therefrom are described herein. Such processes generally include providing a catalyst system, introducing the catalyst system to a reaction zone, introducing 1-chlorobutane to the reaction zone, introducing an olefin monomer to the reaction zone, contacting the olefin monomer with the catalyst system in the presence of the 1-chlorobutane to form a polyolefin and withdrawing the polyolefin from the reaction zone. The catalyst system is generally formed from a process including contacting a magnesium dialkoxide compound with a first agent to form a first compound, contacting the first compound with a plurality of halogenating/titanating agents to form a reaction product and contacting the reaction product with an activating agent to form the catalyst system.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a process for devolatilizing a polymer including passing the polymer through a devolatizer including a plate heat exchanger wherein the plates of the plate heat exchanger are heated by a plurality of heating tubes and wherein the heating tube including a return tube nested inside of a supply tube. The use of the disclosed invention allows for a comparatively small heat profile across heating plates as compared to prior art plate heat exchangers.
Abstract:
Catalyst compositions and processes for the polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers to produce polymers, including copolymers or homopolymers. Such monomers include ethylene, C3+ alpha olefins and substituted vinyl compounds, such as styrene and vinyl chloride. The polymerization catalyst characterized by the formula B(FluL)MQn in which Flu is a fluorenyl group substituted at at least the 2,7- and 3,6-positions by hydrocarbyl groups, preferably relatively bulky hydrocarbyl groups. L is a substituted or unsubstituted cyclopentadienyl, indenyl or fluorenyl group or a heteroorgano group, XR, in which X is a heteroatom from Group 15 or 16 of the Periodic Table of Elements, such as nitrogen, R is an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group or an aryl group and B is a structural bridge extending between the groups L and Flu, which imparts stereorigidity to the ligand structure, M is a Group 4 or Group 5 transition metal, such as titanium, zirconium or hafnium and Q is selected from the group consisting of chlorine, bromine, iodine, an alkyl group, an amino group, an aromatic group and mixtures thereof, with n being 1 or 2.
Abstract:
Methods of forming polyolefins and catalysts are described herein. Such methods generally include forming Ziegler-Natta catalyst compounds in the absence of one or more blended compounds typically used to form such catalyst.
Abstract:
A polymer blend and a method of making the same are provided. The polymer blend includes an ethylene-propylene (C2-C3) random copolymer and a modifier selected from the group consisting of a metallocene-catalyzed polyethylene-based copolymer, a metallocene-catalyzed polyethylene-based terpolymer, and a syndiotactic polypropylene homopolymer. The polymer blend may also include an organic peroxide for visbreaking the polymer blend. An end use article is made from the foregoing polymer blend. The end use article may be, for example, a film, an injection molded article, a compression molded article, a thermoformed article, and a fiber. The end use article is desirably a film having an Elmendorf tear strength of at least about 300 g/ply in the machine and transverse directions.
Abstract:
Hydrocarbon streams are heated uniformly and directly using one or more flameless oxidation burners. Flameless oxidation burners may control the temperature within a range of about 50° C. to reduce the tendency to coking due to localized “hot spots”. The hydrocarbon streams, which may be monomer streams, may pass cross-current (perpendicular) to burners having a longitudinal design or configuration, or may pass parallel to such burners.
Abstract:
Supported catalyst systems, methods of forming polyolefins and the formed polymers are generally described herein. The methods generally include identifying desired polymer properties, providing a transition metal compound and selecting a support material capable of producing the desired polymer properties, wherein the support material includes a bonding sequence selected from Si—O—Al—F, F—Si—O—Al, F—Si—O—Al—F and combinations thereof.
Abstract:
Supported catalyst systems and methods of forming the same are generally described herein. The methods generally include providing a support material including silica-alumina prepared by cogel methods, contacting the support material with a fluorinating agent to form a fluorinated support and contacting the fluorinated support with a transition metal compound to form a supported catalyst system.

Also disclosed is an impact modified polystyrene prepared using the same process and having a ratio of Mz/Mn of at least 4.1.
Abstract:
Molded articles are prepared from propylene-ethylene copolymers and exhibiting improved clarity and strength properties. Articles prepared include bottles and other thin-walled articles. The articles are prepared using an isotactic propylene-ethylene random copolymer resin having an ethylene content of from about 0.5 to about 3 percent by total weight of copolymer, with a xylene solubles content of less than about 1.5 percent. The injection molded article may exhibit less than about 20 percent haze, as determined by ASTM D1003, at a thickness of about 0.08 inch (2.03 mm). Articles may also be prepared from similar copolymers having an ethylene content greater than about 3 percent by total weight of copolymer, with a xylene solubles content of less than about 4 percent by total weight of copolymer. These articles may exhibit less than about 13 percent haze, as determined by ASTM D1003, at a thickness of about 0.08 inch (2.03 mm).
