A wood powder-containing resin molded article which can be reduced in weight by reducing an amount of thermoplastic resin, and also has excellent mechanical strength, and a method for producing the same are provided. A wood powder-containing resin molded article 1 is made of a thermoplastic resin containing wood powder, and includes a non-foamed layer 2 formed on a surface and a foamed layer 3 formed in an inner portion. The foamed layer 3 includes, in order from a side close to the surface, a first foamed layer 3a, a second foamed layer 3b having cells with a smaller average pore size than those of the first foamed layer 3a, and a third foamed layer 3c having cells with a larger average pore size than those of the first foamed layer 3a. The wood powder-containing resin molded article 1 contains a perfuming component.

Disclosed herein are methods and pressure vessels for solid-state microcellular processing of thermoplastic rolls and sheets. In one embodiment, the present invention is directed to a method for making a gas impregnated interleaved roll, which method comprises: providing a pressure vessel having an internal pressure chamber and a rotatable shaft horizontally positioned within the pressure chamber; placing an interleaved roll about the rotatable shaft and within the pressure chamber, wherein the interleaved roll is made from a thermoplastic material sheet interleaved together with a gas-channeling material sheet; pressurizing the pressure chamber to a selected pressure; rotating the rotatable shaft having the interleaved roll thereabouts (thereby rotating the interleaved roll) while under pressure for a selected period of time; and depressurizing the internal chamber to yield the gas impregnated interleaved roll. In other embodiments, the invention is directed to multi-chambered pressure vessels for gas impregnation of thermoplastic rolls, sheets, and films.
Abstract:
Described is a process for making closed cell fluoropolymer foam, and the foam so made. The process includes subjecting a fluoropolymer resin an inert gas at a pressure higher than atmospheric to drive gas into the resin, raising the temperature of the resin to or above its softening point, and reducing the pressure while maintaining the temperature at or above the softening point of the resin, in order to expand the resin to result in closed cell fluoropolymer foam. The resin is cross-linked prior to expansion. The resulting foams can be used in various applications, such as in flotation devices and for making thermal and/or acoustic insulation.

Polymeric materials having a plurality of cells formed therein are described. The polymeric materials include a foamed layer comprising a plurality of uniform microcells, nanocells or combinations thereof in a closed cell network, a transition layer positioned adjacent to the foamed layer, and at least one unfoamed outer layer positioned adjacent to the transition layer. The foamed layer may be present in a volume ranging from about 80 to about 99 percent based on the volume of the polymeric material, the transition layer may present in a volume ranging from about 0 to about 10 percent based on the volume of the polymeric material, and the at least one outer layer may be present in a volume ranging from about 0.01 to about 10 percent based on the volume of the polymeric material. Methods of making such polymeric materials are also described, as are apparatus for providing foamed polymeric materials.

Abstract:
A solid state foaming process permits the use of up to 100% recycled pre- and post-consumer polymer for the manufacture of foamed polymer material and thermoformed foamed polymer articles. The process enables the optional formation of integral unfoamed skins of controllable depth and crystallinity on foamed polymeric materials suitable for a wide variety of applications. Because this process does not alter the underlying chemistry of the material all scrap from the manufacturing process may be reused without additive to form new foamed polymeric materials and articles.

A process for producing a porous laminate having many micropores interconnected in the thickness direction, which comprises: a step in which a laminate is produced which comprises at least three layers comprising an interlayer made of a thermoplastic resin having a hard segment and a soft segment and two nonporous outer layers made of a filler-containing resin and located as outer layers respectively on both sides of the interlayer; a step in which the laminate obtained is impregnated with a supercritical or subcritical fluid and this state is relieved to vaporize the fluid and thereby make the interlayer porous; and a step in which the two nonporous outer layers located respectively on both sides are made porous by stretching.

A thermoplastic resin sheet which has both a high reflectance ratio and excellent shape-holding property suitable for backlights and illumination boxes for use in illumination signboards, illumination fixtures and displays and illumination boxes. The thermoplastic resin foam is manufactured by a manufacturing method including a process for containing inert gas by holding thermoplastic resin sheet containing metallic oxide in a pressurized inert gas atmosphere and a process for heating the thermoplastic resin sheet in which the inert gas is contained at a temperature higher than the softening temperature of the thermoplastic resin, under normal pressure, and foaming the resin.

Also disclosed are improvements to foaming methods and the cellular structures of the foams made therefrom, and methods for altering the impact strength of solid or noncellular thermoplastic materials and the shaping of the materials into useful articles.

Closed cell polyamide foams are prepared by subjecting a polyamide resin to inert gases at an elevated pressure and at a temperature above the softening point of the resin and reducing the pressure while the temperature is maintained above the softening point of the resin, resulting in expansion of the resin.
