Abstract: Articles with covalently attached thiocarbonylthio-containing groups are provided. More specifically, the articles include a solid polymeric substrate with a plurality of thiocarbonylthio-containing groups covalently attached directly to a carbon atom in a polymeric backbone of the solid polymeric substrate. Methods of making the articles with covalently attached thiocarbonylthio-containing are provided. Additionally, methods of using these articles to generate further articles with covalently attached polymeric chains are provided.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a a polymer composition (PC) including at least one thermoplastic polymer (A) and fibres (B) having a fibre length l. At most 10% by weight of the fibres (B), based on the total weight of the fibres (B), have a fibre length l of less than 100 μm, and at most 12% by weight of the fibres (B), based on the total weight of the fibres (B), have a fibre length l of less than 200 μm. Further disclosed herein are a process for producing the polymer composition (PC), a process for producing a moulded article by forming the polymer composition (PC) and a moulded article including the polymer composition (PC). Additionally disclosed herein is a method of using fibres (B) for increasing the toughness and/or reinforcement of moulded articles made from the polymer composition (PC).

Abstract: A porous composition comprising a porous organic polymer (POP) fiber having a diameter of at least 100 nm and a length of at least 1 mm and pores having a size within a range of 10 nm to 5 microns distributed over the surface and volume of the POP fiber, wherein the organic polymer is insoluble in water and may be selected from, e.g., polyolefins, polyesters, polyamides, and polyacrylonitrile. Also described herein is a method for producing a POP fiber comprising: (i) forming a precursor fiber from a blend of an organic polymer and lignin, wherein the lignin is present in the form of domains within the precursor fiber; and (ii) washing the precursor fiber with a solvent that dissolves the lignin to result in the POP fiber. Also described herein is a method for removing oil from an oil-water mixture comprising contacting the oil-water mixture with the POP fibers.

Abstract: Methods of making fiber reinforced composite articles are described. The methods may include treating fibers with a sizing composition that includes a polymerization compound, and introducing the treated fibers to a pre-polymerized composition. The combination of the treated fibers and pre-polymerized composition may then undergo a temperature adjustment to a polymerization temperature at which the pre-polymerized composition polymerizes into a plastic around the fibers to form the fiber-reinforced composite article. Techniques for introducing the treated fibers to the pre-polymerized composition may include pultrusion, filament winding, reactive injection molding (RIM), structural reactive injection molding (SRIM), resin transfer molding (RTM), vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM), long fiber injection (LFI), sheet molding compound (SMC) molding, bulk molding compound (BMC) molding, a spray-up application, and/or a hand lay-up application, among other techniques.

Abstract: Provided is a thermoplastic resin composition which contains three components, i.e., a polyethylene, a polyamide and a compatibilizer and is excellent in impact resistance while realizing a reduction in environmental load, and a modifier capable of imparting impact resistance to a polyethylene. The composition and the modifier each contain a polyethylene, a polyamide and a compatibilizer. The compatibilizer is a modified elastomer having a reactive group that reacts with the polyamide, and the polyethylene and the polyamide have a bio-based carbon content rate of 80% or more according to ISO 16620-2.
