Abstract:
A storage tank having internal and external spaced apart walls defining a first liquid storage space between the two walls and a second liquid storage space surrounded by the internal wall; each of the internal and external walls being joined to a bottom; at least one fluid conduit in fluid flow communication with and between the first and second storage spaces; and a valve capable of blocking fluid flow through the fluid conduit from the second storage space to the first storage space which is actuated by a sudden loss of liquid from the first storage space to outside of the tank.

A cryogenic tank comprising an innermost fluid-confining wall forming a primary barrier made form relatively thin, flexible, impervious, sheet-like laminated building material comprising at least three continuous overlying layers of yielding material adapted to withstand very severe cold conditions, bonded together and consisting of at least one first mechanically strong supporting outer layer, at least one impervious film-like intermediate layer and at least one second inner lining layer providing at least a mechanical and at least temporary protection.
Abstract:
A rotatable valve protector for a compressed gas cylinder having a neck to which a valve is attached. The valve protector comprises a rigid, hollow, open-ended, generally frustoconical element having large lateral openings affording access to the valve and enabling the use of the protector as a handle for the cylinder. The valve protector is rotatably mounted so that the access openings may be oriented in any direction without movement of the cylinder. In addition, the cylinder can be tipped and supported at the neck by the rotatable protector while the bottom of the cylinder is rolled along a supporting surface.
Abstract:
Uranium hexafluoride having a high U-235 content is driven out of a transportation container by heating in a correspondingly heated container using a halogenated hydrogen free organic liquid as the heating medium. There is also provided an apparatus for carrying out the process comprising a container having a reflux condenser and an insert for holding the transportation container closed at the bottom by condensate outlet.
Abstract:
An improved Dewar assembly for infrared detectors is disclosed. Vacuum tight feed-throughs are partially embedded in the inner flask with exposed portions on both sides of a vacuum seal.
Abstract:
A carrier for one or more compressed gas cylinders each having a portion, the under side of which is arranged to receive a supporting hook, the carrier having a frame approximating the height of the cylinder and including a hook near its upper end, the frame being tiltable in one direction with respect to the cylinder for insertion of the hook under the hook receiving portion; the side of the frame opposite from the cylinder having carrier wheels, whereby, upon tilting of the frame in the opposite direction, the hook is raised to support the cylinder in contact with the frame; the frame is provided with a safety bail or retainer loop movable over the cylinder and engagable therewith to provide a second retainer for the cylinder. One embodiment has tilt aiding wheels at the bottom of the frame to provide rolling support for the frame on movement of the frame into position for engagement with the hook receiving portion cooperate with the carrier wheels to effect rolling support for the cylinder as well as load distribution and balance.
Abstract:
Liquefied gas is stored in a large rigid or semirigid cylindrical container. Between the walls and floor of this container and the walls and floor of an outer container, which may be an earthen cavity in which the container rests, is distributed a continuous layer of insulating material such as perlite or vermiculite in granular form. This insulating material serves as the sole means of support for the rigid or semirigid container and the liquefied gas stored therein. An impediment is included in the construction near the intersection of the floor and side wall of the rigid or semirigid container, the impediment completely encircling the container to substantially limit the cross-sectional area through which the granular insulation material may flow upward. By confining this cross-sectional area, the creep or migration of insulation material from beneath the container during initial filling, repeated filling and emptying of the liquefied gas contents of said container is substantially reduced or eliminated.
Abstract:
In an underground storage, containing hot or cold storage materials, a circulating gas or fluid is passed in a plurality of conducts in the walls, floor, and ceiling of the storage and near their surface towards the storage, and, if a container or containing vessel is constructed inside the walls of said underground storage, the gas or the fluid is conducted either in the mentioned outer wall as previously mentioned or between the wall of the container and the outer rock walls, particularly in the last mentioned case also in ducts or in galleries with guiding devices for the medium to insure a corresponding contact with surfaces involved, or, in some cases, in the interior of said container wall. By controlling the temperature, humidity, and pressure of said circulating medium and creating a pressure differential towards adjacent areas, the stability and the sealing characteristics of the outer wall are greatly improved, the heat influx to the product storage further substantially reduced, the sublimation of ice brought under improved control with a view to prevent damage to the storage wall insulation. The suggested method, using the envisaged multi-purpose circulating system, also offers further advantages such as a possibility of recovering losses of stored product from leaks and, in addition, increased control and safety, the latter in particular when storing volatile and combustible fluid materials. The design offers an improved method of applying sealants, adding auxiliary products, and removing others from suggested circulating system. New types of sealants are suggested.
Abstract:
An oxygen generator for welding, cutting and brazing work includes a gas-tight container and a cartridge holder for cartridges giving off oxygen when burned. The gas-tight container is constructed as a pressure tank and envelops the cartridge holder in such a way so as to leave a storage volume which is capable of accommodating the amount of oxygen given off by burning at least one cartridge without exceeding the pressure limits of the pressure tank.
