Within the unified system, parallel processing computer systems, each having an input (e.g., 77) controlling a plurality of computers (e.g., 205), generate and output user information at receiver stations. Under broadcast control, local computers (73, 205), combine user information selectively into prior art communications to exhibit personalized mass media programming at video monitors (202), speakers (263), printers (221), etc. At intermediate transmission stations (e.g., cable television stations), signals in network broadcasts and from local inputs (74, 77, 97, 98) cause control processors (71) and computers (73) to selectively automate connection and operation of receivers (53), recorder/players (76), computers (73), generators (82), strippers (81), etc. At receiver stations, signals in received transmissions and from local inputs (225, 218, 22) cause control processors (200) and computers (205) to automate connection and operation of converters (201), tuners (215), decryptors (224), recorder/players (217), computers (205), furnaces (206), etc. Processors (71, 200) meter and monitor availability and usage of programming.

Abstract:
Systems, apparatus, methods and computer readable mediums for efficient and unconstrained information distribution and IP multicasting are provided. An exemplary method may include receiving, from a set top box, information indicative of criteria associated with targeted advertisement; and determining, at a set top box, whether the criteria corresponds to a characteristic of a household at which the criteria is received. The method may also include joining, from a set top box, a multicast group associated with the criteria in the event the criteria is determined to correspond to the characteristic of the household at which the criteria is received. The method may also include receiving, via multicast, at a set top box, the targeted advertisement associated with the criteria; and displaying, at a video display device, the targeted advertisement. The exemplary method may allow efficient and unconstrained information distribution leading to improved application quality and performance.
Abstract:
Methods are provided for predicting uplink interference potential to a mobile satellite system (MSS) generated by ancillary terrestrial components (ATCs) of an ancillary terrestrial network (ATN) and/or ATC radioterminals that are configured to terrestrially use/reuse satellite frequencies that are used and/or authorized for use by a MSS. The methods include measuring power transmitted by and/or received at one or more radioterminals communicating with one or more terrestrial networks and/or transmitted by and/or received at the one or more terrestrial networks communicating with the one or more radioterminals using terrestrial frequencies that are at least partially outside a range of the satellite frequencies. Uplink interference potential to the MSS generated by terrestrial use/reuse of satellite frequencies by the ATN and/or the ATC radioterminals is predicted responsive to the measured power. Related ancillary terrestrial networks are also described.
Abstract:
A system and method is provided for permitting a mobile device to connect to a broadcast station web site and to receive a broadcast station broadcast in response to selection of a bookmark. Selection of the bookmark results in a tuner on the mobile device being tuned to receive a broadcast while the mobile device substantially simultaneously connects to a web site for the broadcast station. The bookmark may be programmed by the user and may represent different broadcast stations according to parameters. Bookmarks may be displayed to the user based on geographical location information. Bookmarks may be created by scanning for available broadcasts at a geographical location. RDS information may supplement broadcast information and may be sent to the mobile device via CBS messages.
Abstract:
A system and method is provided for permitting a data terminal to connect to a broadcast station web site and to receive a broadcast station broadcast in response to selection of a bookmark. Selection of the bookmark results in a tuner on the data terminal being tuned to receive a broadcast while the data terminal substantially simultaneously connects to a web site for the broadcast station. Broadcast frequency information and web site address information for the bookmark may be stored on the data terminal, or such information may be stored remotely, such as on a station id server in communication with the data terminal. The bookmark may be programmed by the user and may represent different broadcast stations according to parameters.

A system, method and computer program product for product that enables users of broadcast messaging systems to more expediently and efficiently find communities, both for subscribing and for sending messages. The system, method and computer program product provides an end-user with the ability to send messages for delivery to more targeted communities of messaging users. In this aspect, the system and method determines one or more attributes of messaging activity associated with one or more communities of users communicating messages in a messaging system; and, displays via an interface, a graphical representation of the attributes and inter-relationships between the attributes. The user may then select via the interface a recipient community for receiving a message to be sent based on the graphical representation displayed.

In a television reception control system, a master reception device receives and plays back broadcast data from a cable television network, and communicates with a slave reception device via an in-home network. The slave reception device receives and plays back the broadcast data from the cable television network, and communicates with the master reception device via the in-home network, and when no connection with the master reception device is established for a predetermined period of time, the slave reception device is suspended from receiving the broadcast data.

The invention relates to a process for the remote deactivation of at least one decoder for accessing multimedia digital data, which is provided by a service operator. The decoder has a unique identifier (ID) known to the operator. To deactivate a decoder with determined identifier (ID), the operator sends, through a communication network linking the decoder to the operator, a destruction command for destroying all or part of the software embedded in the decoder, this destruction command being addressed to the decoder with determined identifier (ID). The invention also relates to a decoder which comprises an eraser software module suitable for erasing all or part of the software embedded in the decoder when the decoder receives a destruction command which is addressed to it.
