Abstract:
A method of the multiple input multiple output feedback is disclosed. In accordance with an embodiment of the invention, the multiple input multiple output feedback method includes a receiver receiving a reference signal from a base station and calculating a signal to interference and noise ratio from the received reference signal. The method further includes determining a modulation and coding scheme based on the signal to interference and noise ratio and a receiver type.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus are provided for improved efficiency in an extended multiple antenna communication system. A multiplier is employed on the number of points in the FFT that is greater than the multiplier on the frequency (bandwidth) of the legacy 802.11 a/g system. In one exemplary implementation, a 256 point FFT is employed in 40 MHz (with a 4N multiplier on the number of possible tones and a 2N multiplier on the frequency). While the efficiency for the OFDM symbol is improved, additional overhead is required in the preamble training (the length of the preamble is proportional to the number of tones in the FFT). Thus, a number of preamble constructs are provided that couple the improved efficiency with shorter preambles. In addition, an improved tone design provides additional efficiency gains.

Abstract:
A low IF mixer and method for down-converting a signal at a desired frequency are disclosed with improved selectivity performance. The energy of sidebands on each side of the desired frequency is evaluated; and a local oscillator frequency is selected based on the evaluation of the energy. Generally, the local oscillator frequency associated with the sideband having a lower energy is selected. The desired frequency may have a frequency of RF and the sidebands have a frequency of the desired frequency plus or minus an offset frequency (RF+IF or RF−IF). The signal at the desired frequency may be multiplied by the selected local oscillator frequency to down-convert the signal.
Abstract:
A station performing a method to toggle a channel estimation setting between a full channel estimation that includes estimating the channel based upon a predetermined number of received reference symbols prior to a current subframe and a partial channel estimation that includes estimating the channel based upon a subset of the predetermined number of received reference symbols. The method includes changing the setting from full to partial when a predetermined number of consecutive subframes immediately prior to the current subframe had no downlink allocated and a reliability value indicates that control signals are capable of being reliably received. The method also includes changing the setting from partial to full when the current subframe had a downlink allocated thereto or the reliability value indicates that the control signals are incapable of being received to estimate the channel using the partial channel estimation.

A Channel Quality Indicator table for wireless multiple input multiple output (MIMO) networks is disclosed. In one embodiment, a method of generating a table for channel quality indicator (CQI) for an open loop MIMO transmission includes calculating performance of a link between a transmitter and a user end unit for each MIMO transmission mode over a range of average signal-to-noise ratio, and selecting the MIMO transmission mode that maximizes performance for each subset of the range of average signal-to-noise ratio. The method further includes storing the selected MIMO transmission mode and the corresponding subset of the range of average signal-to-noise ratio in a CQI table, the CQI table being stored in an user end unit and a base transceiver station of the open loop MIMO network.
Abstract:
A method of estimating channel impulse response in a signal transmitted over a channel in a communication system is described. The channel estimator obtains a priori knowledge about the transmitted signal, and then uses the transmitted signal and the a priori knowledge to choose an estimate of channel impulse response which minimizes the expected distance between the transmitted signal and a reconstructed signal. The expected distance that is minimized is a cost function, represented by E{∥r−Bh∥2r}. By using soft decision feedback, the invention minimizes erroneous decision feedback which can cause error propagation. The decisions are usually in the form of log likelihood ratios (LLR).
Abstract:
Two or more digital signals are encoded using two or more respective line codes. The line codes are chosen in conjunction with the data rates of the digital signals such that the encoded signals are substantially orthogonal to each other in the frequency domain. As such, the two or more encoded signals may be combined and transmitted via a single physical medium with little or no interference. A transmitter for encoding and transmitting the digital signals contains line coders for encoding the digital signals and a combiner for combining the encoded signals for transmission via a single physical medium.

Apparatus and method for iteratively decoding a signal are provided. The apparatus includes a central pool of resources for iteratively decoding signals. The central pool may run a plurality of iterative decoding processes, each process being allocated to a signal processing unit upon request and depending upon resource availability.
Abstract:
A method performed at a network component for indicating a number of grants in a transmission and a corresponding method performed at a station to limit a search for the grants to the number indicated in the transmission. In one embodiment, the transmission includes physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) information and modified cyclic redundancy check (CRC) information, the modified CRC information being generated from CRC information for the PDCCH information and a modifier representing a number of grants. The station determines the number of grants from the modified CRC information, performs a search for a first grant within the PDCCH information and terminates the search upon identifying the first grant, when the number of grants is the first number.

Methods and apparatus are provided for communicating data in a multiple antenna communication system having N transmit antennas. According to one aspect of the invention, a header format includes a legacy preamble having at least one legacy long training field and an extended portion having at least N additional long training fields on each of the N transmit antennas. The N additional long training fields may be tone interleaved across the N transmit antennas and are used for MIMO channel estimation. The extended portion may include a short training field for power estimation. The short training field may be tone interleaved across the N transmit antennas and have an extended duration to support beam steering.
