Abstract:
The use of anti-C5 antibodies to reduce the dysfunction of the immune and hemostatic systems associated with extracorporeal circulation procedures, such as, cardiopulmonary bypass procedures, is disclosed. The antibodies have been found to significantly reduce complement activation, platelet activation, leukocyte activation, and platelet-leukocyte adhesion associated with such procedures.
Abstract:
Formwork (15) for moulding walls of reservoirs in any desired curved configuration. The formwork utilizes a flexible panel (18) having a form surface (17) on one side against which the reservoir wall may be moulded and connector means (37) on the other side for connecting adjustable bracing (36) thereto for holding the formwork in position. The bracing may be adjusted to vary the curvature of the formwork.
Abstract:
A bus interface for interfacing between a processor and a shared bus is disclosed. The bus interface allows the exchange of data in the form of packets between the bus and the processor. An interface control device exchanges control data with the shared bus (e.g. identification signals, polling signals, control signals) in order to regulate accesses of the interface circuit to the shared bus. State machines (e.g. a transmitter and a receiver) including data pipelines, are responsive to control signals from the interface control device for exchanging data between the shared bus and a data storage device. An access control device both controls the flow of data between the processor and the data storage device and regulates access to the data storage device between the processor and the state machines.
Abstract:
A vortex generation device for reducing drag on an upswept aircraft fuselage afterbody and including a vortex generator vane that extends longitudinally from along an outer mold line of the fuselage of an aircraft adjacent an upswept afterbody of the fuselage and that is configured and positioned to reduce drag on an upswept aircraft fuselage afterbody by developing vortices that counteract vortices generated along such an upswept fuselage afterbody. The vane is disposed aft of a side paratrooper jump door of the aircraft fuselage and has a spine and leading end that are faired smoothly into the mold line of the fuselage.
Abstract:
An interconnect scheme includes a conductive ink forming a plurality of conductive regions, and a dielectric ink occupying spaces between the conductive regions. The conductive ink and the dielectric ink have substantially identical optical, acoustic, and x-ray absorption properties, thereby making the interconnect scheme tamper-resistant and/or difficult to identify and reverse-engineer using conventional detection methods.
Abstract:
An object moving through a fluid uses plasma to keep turbulent mixing vortices associated with turbulent air away from the majority of the surface of the object. The plasma may be used to enhance physical riblets, or the plasma may create a virtual riblet.
Abstract:
A new and distinct cultivar of plum, similar to a Japanese-American hybrid-type originating as a hybrid seedling of the cross: ‘Oka’בZ's Blue Giant’. The present cultivar is unique from its maternal parent and other plums adapted to the Midwest Zone 3b and above, because it is similar to many California dessert plums (dark blue-black and nearly round) and with a superior ripe flavor to most common cultivars tested in its ripening season. The instant cultivar is also more dwarf in growth habit and has an earlier fruit maturity than most common midwest plums.
Abstract:
New dynamic air freshener unit comprises a porous synthetic polymer support impregnated with a fragrance. The synthetic polymer support is one produced by:(a) bonding together small particles of solid polymer;(b) coagulating polymer solutions in a non-solvent for the polymer; or(c) expanding a thermoplastic or thermosetting plastic by means of a blowing agent; to form a porous body. The unit is especially useful in vacuum cleaners.
Abstract:
In various embodiments, an inductance of an inductor is tuned by adjusting a position of a conductor and/or a magnetic material with respect to a conducting wire of the inductor, thereby changing the electro-magnetic characteristics of the conducting wire. The conductor and/or magnetic material can be disposed in a microfluidic channel and can be moved within the microfluidic channel using a suitable actuator mechanism.
Abstract:
The invention relates a method and apparatus for reducing the drag on aircraft, particularly aircraft with an upswept afterbody. The method includes the steps of positioning a plurality of drag reducing elements on the fuselage of the aircraft, wherein the drag reducing elements are positioned on the fuselage from a position at the breakline of the fuselage and extending toward the tail of the aircraft. In preferred embodiments, each of the plurality of drag reducing elements is positioned such that a first end of the drag reducing element is at an angle of between approximately 15 and 35° nose up relative to the flow of air about the fuselage at the location where the drag reducing element is positioned.
