A surgical instrument with articulated jaw structure includes a frame and two jaws. The jaws have proximal portions that are mounted to each other for movement in a substantially parallel relation between a fully open position wherein the jaws are separated for receiving tissue therebetween and an approximated position wherein the jaws are closer together. Preferably, the jaws are in the fully open position when the distal portion of at least of the jaws is located in an extended position and are in the approximated position when the distal portion of the extended jaw or jaws is located in a retracted position. The surgical instrument may further include a detachable knife assembly and knife actuating mechanism.

A surgical stapler having a supporting frame, including a stationary jaw having an anvil, a movable jaw, a replaceable staple cartridge carried by the movable jaw, a mechanism for approximating the cartridge relative to the anvil, and a mechanism for firing the device so as to crimp the staples against the anvil in a manner to enable the surgeon to substantially simultaneously place one or more rows of surgical staples in organs or tissues. The device includes interrelated, cooperating first and second locking mechanisms for positively preventing refiring if the staple cartridge is spent and for providing a tactile sensation to the surgeon to indicate that a spent staple cartridge is present within the instrument.

A surgical handle for use with an endoscopic instrument that is insertable into a body cavity insufflated with a gas. The surgical handle includes a housing having a mount that defines an opening for receiving the endoscopic instrument. A first elongated pusher tube is located within the housing and aligned with the mount opening. The pusher tube includes an interior passage that is in fluid communication with the endoscopic instrument. A first actuator moves the pusher tube longitudinally with respect to the mount opening. The interior passage is sized to permit the flow therethrough of insufflation gas escaping from the body cavity up to a predetermined rate, the rate being set at an amount that will not result in deflation of the body cavity.

A trocar for placement in the lumen of a cannula to facilitate inserting the cannula through the wall of a body cavity, the trocar comprising an obturator with a point for piercing the wall of the body cavity, and a protective sleeve mounted concentrically around the obturator. The obturator retracts proximally relative to the protective sleeve after the trocar point has penetrated through the wall of the body cavity. The protective sleeve is mounted for axial movement relative to the obturator, retracting proximally in response to drag from the wall of the body cavity as the trocar is advanced through the wall, and advancing distally after the cannula has penetrated through the wall, reducing the drag on the sleeve. The distal advancement of the sleeve triggers the retraction of the obturator.

A stent has a plurality of cells disposed about the circumference of the stent, with at least one cell having a plurality of struts that are connected together to form the cell. At least one strut has a portion that compensates for foreshortening of the struts during expansion of the stent.

A surgical stapler for use by a surgeon to place one or more rows of surgical staples in organs or tissue. The stapler is of a character having a supporting frame, a replaceable staple cartridge, an anvil, a mechanism for approximating the cartridge relative to the anvil, and a mechanism for firing the device so as to crimp the staples against the anvil. The device, while at all times permitting approximation of the cartridge relative to the anvil, provides a novel safety mechanism that clearly indicates to the surgeon that the staples have been fired from the staple cartridge and simultaneously disables the device until it is manually reset.

A medical backcheck valve includes a hollow housing containing an upwardly biased piston assembly for controlling liquid flow therethrough. The piston assembly comprises a substantially rigid plug having one end protruding from the upper end of the housing, and a flexible sheath covering having a relatively small diameter upper end surrounding the plug, a main seal for controlling flow through said first flow space, and a tubular lower end, secured at the bottom of the housing, for preventing liquid from entering within the covering.

Methods, devices, and systems for a) revascularization and/or b) performing other medical procedures at vascular or non-vascular intracorporeal locations within a mammalian body. The methods generally comprise the formation of at least one extravascular passageway from a blood vessel to a vascular or non-vascular target location. In the revascularization methods the extravascular passageway is utilized for blood flow. In the medical procedure methods the extravascular passageway is utilized as a conduit for accessing or performing procedures at the vascular or non-vascular target location. Also disclosed are catheter devices and systems which are useable to form the extravascular passageways of the invention, as well as apparatus for modifying, maintaining and/or closing such extravascular passageways.
