The generator includes a rotor comprising a shaft with a skewed alignment of magnets on a ring, a stator of toothed laminations with coils wound around the teeth, and a housing with cooling chambers. The housing has annular subchambers arranged successively along the length of the generator in such a way that cooling fluid must flow to the opposite side of the generator to pass into the next chamber. Because the housing is highly heat conductive, this structure of annular subchambers increases the uniformity of the fluid temperature.

A motor having a power switching circuit adapted to be connected between a power source and its winding for selectively energizing the winding to generate a magnetic field which causes a rotating assembly to rotate. A position sensing circuit provides a position signal representative of the position of the rotating assembly and a commutating circuit controls the power switching circuit to commutate the power switching circuit at a commutating angle to achieve a desired rotating speed of the rotating assembly. The commutating circuit varies the commutating angle in response to the position signal to maintain the substantially constant rotating speed of the rotating assembly. As result, the efficiency of the motor is varied to maintain the substantially constant rotating speed.

A method of determining torque of an electronically commutated motor arranged to drive a blower means for flowing air through a contained space with the electronically controlled motor and the blower means having a combined predetermined inertia. In practicing this method, power is applied to the electronically commutated motor, and the blower means is thereby accelerated to a predetermined speed. The power is then removed from the electronically commutated motor, and thereby the blower means is decelerated. A circuit for controlling the energization of an electrical load from an AC source. The circuit has a pair of DC lines, and means is provided for rectifying the AC output of the source to apply a DC voltage across the DC lines in the form of a full wave rectified sinusoidal signal. Signal switching means for connection between the DC lines and the load establishes a conductive path therebetween during a variable time interval when the voltage applied by the full wave rectified sinusoidal signal exceeds the voltage across the load, and means including the switching means is provided for chopping the full wave rectified sinusoidal signal to apply pulses to the load during the variable time interval at a frequency which is high with respect to the frequency of the signal. Means connected to the chopping means for modulating the width of the pulses is responsive to an externally derived signal representative of the desired operation of the load, and means is responsive to the load current for modifying the externally derived signal to maintain the amplitude of the load current below a predetermined level whereby a high power factor is presented to the AC source during a predetermined range of operation of the load.A method of operating an electronically commutated motor is also disclosed.

A single phase permanent magnet motor includes a rotor, a stator, and a quadrature axis winding positioned out-of-phase from a main winding of the stator for generating an output signal representative of rotor angular position. An integrator can be coupled to the quadrature axis winding for phase retarding the output signal, and a comparator can be coupled to the integrator for detecting zero crossings of the phase retarded output signal to provide a commutation signal. The quadrature axis winding can be positioned about ninety electrical degrees out-of-phase from the main winding of the stator, and the integrator can be adapted to phase retard the output signal by a number of degrees which decreases as a speed of the motor increases. At low speeds the phase retard is preferably at about ninety degrees so that the phase retarded signal becomes in-phase with the main stator winding back EMF voltage. The motor may further include a rectifier coupled to the quadrature axis winding for rectifying the output signal, and a lowpass filter for filtering the rectified output signal to provide a signal proportional to velocity. Also the single phase motor is commutated for maximum torque production.
