A capacitively powered motor having a power switching circuit adapted to be connected between a power source and its winding for selectively energizing the winding to generate a magnetic field which causes a rotating assembly to rotate. A position sensing circuit provides a position signal representative of the position of the rotating assembly and a commutating circuit controls the power switching circuit to commutate the power switching circuit at a commutating angle and at a substantially constant duty cycle to achieve a desired rotating speed of the rotating assembly. The commutating circuit varies the commutating angle in response to the position signal to maintain the substantially constant rotating speed of the rotating assembly. As result, the efficiency of the motor is varied to maintain the substantially constant rotating speed.

A motor having an external rotor, or "inside out motor" has a split C arrangement of ferromagnetic members which function as the poles of the electromagnet in the motor. The ferromagnetic members are generally C-shaped and mounted on opposite end caps of the motor. The ferromagnetic members on the opposing end caps are angularly offset from each other. The ferromagnetic members on each end cap are also spaced apart from each other, and receive a portion of the motor windings within them. The motor is constructed for assembly using few or no separate fastening devices to secure the components together. In one embodiment, a bearing core serves as the base on which all parts are assembled.

In an exemplary embodiment of the method, power is applied to the motor under microprocessor control such that a pulse modulated current profile is applied to the motor which in turn controls the amount of torque generated by the motor. A bearing receives the shaft for rotatably mounting the rotor. A stator assembly is mounted on said bearing and includes a bobbin mounted generally coaxially with the rotor shaft and having an interior diameter, an exterior diameter, a first axial end and a second axial end. A winding is wound on the bobbin and extends around the axis of the rotor shaft. The winding has a width in a direction parallel to the lengthwise extension of the rotor shaft. Plural separate ferromagnetic members are on each of the first and second axial ends of the bobbin. Each ferromagnetic member has a radially outer leg extending generally between the winding and the magnet. The outer legs of the ferromagnetic members on the first axial end of the bobbin extend generally from the first axial end of the bobbin toward the second axial end and the outer legs of the ferromagnetic members on the second axial end of the bobbin extend generally from the second axial end toward the first axial end. The ferromagnetic members on each of the first and second axial ends are disposed in angularly spaced, non-overlying positions around the longitudinal axis with respect to the other ferromagnetic members on the same axial end.

The stacked laminations are mechanically interlocked with a staple-style interlock that secures all the laminations in the stack together. The invention further permits rapid, substantially conventional manufacturing techniques to be employed in the formation of rotor laminations used to build the rotors. Flux leakage and formation of reluctance components are inhibited either within the individual rotor laminations or along the length of the rotor by interleaving rotor lamination of different types. The rotor may further be constructed to absorb vibrations within the rotor core and insulate the rotor shaft. The rotor may be still further be constructed for counterbalancing the unbalance of a shaft on which the rotor is mounted.

A protective DC link circuit connecting a motor to a power supply. The motor has a stationary assembly and a rotatable assembly in magnetic coupling relation thereto and includes windings adapted to be commutated in at least one preselected sequence. The motor also has power switches for selectively providing power to the windings in the preselected sequence by switching the power supply in connection with the windings whereby an electromagnetic field is produced for rotating the rotatable assembly. The DC link circuit connects the power supply to the power switches. The DC link circuit includes a link capacitor connected in parallel with the power supply wherein a voltage across the link capacitor defines a DC link voltage. The protective circuit also includes a comparator for detecting the DC link voltage and for generating an overvoltage signal representative of an overvoltage condition in the DC link circuit and a power switch for shunting current in the DC link circuit across the link capacitor thereby dissipating the overvoltage condition.
