Abstract: A vehicle is described, and includes a drivetrain system including an internal combustion engine and a geartrain, an accessory device, and a route monitoring system. A controller includes an instruction set to monitor operation of the accessory device, and a request to operate the accessory device. When the request to operate the accessory device includes a request to activate the accessory device based upon not exceeding a limit for an operating parameter of the accessory device, the instruction set executes to determine a horizon for the vehicle based upon the projected path for the vehicle, determine a projected road load and a speed constraint based upon the horizon for the vehicle, and determine a projected axle torque command based upon the projected road load. A first routine determines a first command for operating the accessory device that minimizes fuel consumption and meets the projected axle torque command.

Abstract: A method for operating a vehicle includes drawing operational power from a first set of battery cells and providing heating/cooling to the first set of battery cells and not to a second set of battery cells to maintain the first set of battery cells within an operational temperature window in a first mode of operation. The method switches to a second mode of operation in response to a power assist request, and draws operational power from the first set of battery cells and a second set of battery cells and provides heating/cooling to maintain the first set of battery cells and the second set of battery cells within the operational temperature window during the second mode of operation.

A support plate is disposed at a first side of the battery. A pressure plate disposed at a second side of the battery opposite the first side. The pressure plate movable with respect to the support plate to control the pressure of the battery. A cam disposed at the pressure plate is configured to rotate to move the pressure plate with respect to the support plate. A cam shaft rotates the cam to move the pressure plate. A motor generates a rotation at the cam shaft.

Abstract: A vehicle, system and method of operating a battery having a plurality of modules, each module having a plurality of strings. The vehicle includes the battery. Abstract: In one exemplary embodiment, a system in a vehicle includes two or more battery packs. Each of the two or more battery packs corresponds with a battery monitoring system (BMS) that monitors a charge and voltage of the battery pack. The system also includes three or more switches coupled to the two or more battery packs and a vehicle controller to control the three or more switches for operation in multiple modes. In one of the multiple modes, the three or more switches are controlled by the vehicle controller to charge only one of the two or more battery packs with a charger external to the vehicle to equalize the voltage among the two or more battery packs.

Abstract: A solar energy charging system of a vehicle includes a dynamically adjustable battery (DAB) configured to be connected to a solar energy conversion device and charged by the solar energy conversion device. The DAB is controllable to adjust an output voltage of the DAB to one of a plurality of output voltages, and the DAB is configured to supply electrical power generated by the solar energy conversion device to a vehicle battery assembly. The solar energy charging system also includes a controller configured to detect an input voltage to the conversion device, select an output voltage of the DAB based on the input voltage, and control the DAB to provide the selected output voltage to a high voltage DC-DC converter to charge the battery assembly.

Abstract: In various embodiments, systems, apparatuses and methods are provided to distribute coolant to an electric motor. The apparatus includes a pan configured with a set of holes for coolant flow; an assembly including a set of bar linkages, a set of discs, and a single actuator motor wherein the assembly is attached to the pan wherein the single actuator motor is linked via bar linkages to discs that enable configuring a planar angle of the pan to obtain an optimum hole location of holes for coolant flow; and in response to external disturbances to the apparatus that redirect the coolant flow from the target region of the electric motor, the single actuator motor is controlled by an algorithm to change the planar angle of the pan to obtain the optimum hole location to direct coolant flow to the target region of the electric motor.
