摘要: Initialization nonuniformity due to interference of light which occurs during an initialization process is reduced without causing degradation in the characteristic of signals recorded/reproduced on/from respective recording layers. A multilayer optical disk comprising at least a first information recording layer and a second information recording layer formed, on a substrate, into a multilayer structure with an intermediate layer disposed therebetween is illuminated with initializing light from the side of the first information recording layer to initialize the first information recording layer formed of a phase-change material serving as a recording material. The illumination with the initializing light is performed such that the numerical aperture NA of an objective lens used for illumination with the illuminating light, the longitudinal length L of the beam size of the initializing light, the thickness D of the intermediate layer, and the ratio R1 of the amount of light striking the first information recording layer after passing through the first information recording layer and being reflected by the second information recording layer to the amount of light incident on the first information recording layer satisfy the following relation for a wavelength &lgr;i of the initializing light: L×R1 ≦25[1−exp(−0.0004×NA4×D2)].

摘要: An optical disc having a light transmitting layer of a reduced uniform thickness. The optical disc has a transparent film bonded via a pressure-sensitive adhesive sheet or a dry photopolymer sheet on a substrate to serve as a light transmitting layer. The signal recording surface is formed on the substrate and/or the transparent film. The light transmitting layer may be constituted solely by a pressure-sensitive adhesive sheet or a dry photopolymer sheet. In the present optical disc, recording and/or reproduction is performed from the light transmitting layer with respect to the signal recording surface. The pressure-sensitive adhesive sheet or the dry photopolymer sheet is itself in a sheet form and is previously formed into a layer (sheet) of a pre-set thickness, in a manner different from the case in which a UV light curable resin is coated on a substrate. The light transmitting layer of an extremely thin film thickness and devoid of sporadic film thickness variations can easily be formed by using the sheet as an adhesive layer or a light transmitting layer itself.

摘要: Even when manufacturing of a waveguide is fluctuated and an optical parameter is fluctuated or a wavelength of emitted light is fluctuated, a phase difference between two intrinsic modes can be compensated (positive integral multiple of .pi.). Thus, it is possible to prevent a reproduced signal from being deteriorated by elliptically polarized light. A magneto-optical reproducing pickup includes an optical waveguide (4) for guiding light reflected on a magneto-optical recording medium to a differential photo-detecting unit (9) side and phase compensating circuitry for compensating a phase difference between light components of a TE mode an a TM mode included in reflected light. In this case, the phase compensating circuitry comprises the optical waveguide (4) composed of a substrate formed of an electrooptic crystal and a thin film having a light refractive index higher than that of the substrate formed on the substrate, phase control electrodes (21a and 22b) for applying an electric field to the optical waveguide (4) in the direction along the TM mode and a feedback circuit (11).
