There are provided an oil chamber to be connected to a hydraulic actuator, a pressurizing chamber containing therein, in a sealed manner, a medium which varies between a gaseous state and a liquid state, and a heating device which heats and evaporates the medium inside the pressurizing chamber and through which cooling water for cooling the power source to be mounted on the vehicle flows. The hydraulic pressure is generated by compressing the oil chamber by a vapor pressure of the medium inside the pressurizing chamber. In case the hydraulic actuator is a hydraulic cylinder for a vehicle height control, there is provided a flow control valve which controls the amount of supply of the cooling water to the heating device depending on the vehicle height.

A power steering system is disclosed which automatically corrects unexpected variations in the path of a vehicle without requiring a driver to make corrections. A rotary valve in the power steering system includes an inner sleeve connected to a steering wheel, an outer sleeve connected to a pinion shaft meshed with a rack bar, and a torsion bar coupled to the inner sleeve and the pinion shaft. The rotary valve switches oil passages communicating with a power cylinder by means of relative rotation between the inner sleeve and the outer sleeve to thereby assist in steering. The outer sleeve and the pinion shaft are connected to each other for slight relative rotation through an elastomer or resilient connecting member. If an unexpected variation in path is produced in the vehicle, the outer sleeve is rotated by the operation of a torque motor which causes the operation of the rotary valve, thereby moving the power cylinder whereby a steering force is produced for correcting the variation in path.

By combining feedback control and feed forward control, immunity from external disturbances and lateral stability can be both ensured each at a high level over the entire range of vehicle speed. By appropriately selecting the transfer function of the control system, it is possible to achieve desired responsiveness and stability. Furthermore, the vehicle response in the range where the cornering force of tires tends to saturate can be improved, and it is therefore possible to neutralize the steering property over the entire vehicle speed range.

The piston rod is also operatively connected through a suitable connection to the cylinder so that rotary motion of the piston rod is carried to the cylinder. Furthermore, the system monitors the steering of the vehicle driver to prevent the vehicle driver from relying upon this steering assist control to an excessive extent.

The estimated driving skill is used as a control parameter of a vehicle steering system which, for instance, provides a steering property depending on the yaw rate of the vehicle, or provides a reaction opposing a steering input according to the yaw rate of the vehicle. Thus, a skilled vehicle operator will benefit from brisk handling of the vehicle, and can maneuver the vehicle at will, while an unskilled vehicle operator will benefit from stable handling of the vehicle, and will find the vehicle easier to handle and less tiring.

In a control system for a front and rear wheel steering vehicle which steers the rear wheels so as to cancel a deviation of an actual yaw rate from a standard yaw rate which can be computed from the steering input, the vehicle speed and other parameters, there is provided a feature to automatically and manually cancel the yaw rate feedback control. If the actual yaw rate continues to exceed a threshold level for more than a certain time period, the yaw rate feedback is canceled gradually so as not to cause any abrupt change in the handling of the vehicle. Alternatively, if the vehicle operator wishes to operate the vehicle under extreme conditions, he may manually cancel the yaw rate feedback control so as to avoid undesirable interference or conflict between the manual steering effort and the yaw rate feedback control action. Thus, the maneuverability of the vehicle under extreme conditions can be improved without losing the benefits of the yaw rate feedback control.
