Abstract: Bandwidth modulation may enable most of the display data-path to operate at a lower performance level to reduce power consumption by using compression as part of the display engine capability. Use of compression may afford a bit rate reduction and/or lane width reduction on the display interface to support high resolution display. With the bit rate and/or lane reduction and selective use of a refresh rate reduction, this technique can be used to lower the power consumption of the display data-path.

Abstract: Techniques are described to monitor a level of graphics processing activity and control power usage based on the level. When no graphics processing activity is detected for a period of time, then a timing controller for a display device is instructed to capture a current image and repeatedly display the captured image. The graphics processing devices can be powered down. When graphics processing activity is detected, the graphics processing devices are powered up and the components used to capture an image and display the captured image are powered down.

Abstract: A frame of pixel data may be burst at a higher frame rate to create a lower effective refresh rate when the actual image update rate is lower than the frame rate. This results in the ability to power manage the transmit portion of the display engine and the receive portion of the panel electronics, while reducing display initiated repetitive memory traffic to conserve power.

Abstract: Techniques are described to transmit commands to a display device. The commands can be transmitted in header byte fields of secondary data packets. The commands can be used to cause a target device to capture a frame, enter or exit self refresh mode, or reduce power use of a connection. In addition, a request to exit main link standby mode can cause the target enter training mode without explicit command to exit main link standby mode.
