A prepolymerized solid catalyst for gaseous phase or slurry polymerization of alpha olefins is disclosed. The catalyst comprises a porous carrier having a particle size of 20 to 200 microns onto which has been deposited an aluminoxane and a transition metal compound having at least one cycloalkadienyl group, the transition metal being from group 4 of the Periodic Table. The transition metal is present in an amount of 0.003 to 3 mmol/gm of carrier, and the aluminum to transition metal atomic ratio is from 15 to 1000. This catalyst is then prepolymerized with 0.2 to 30 gm of an alpha olefin per gram of catalyst to form the final prepolymerized solid catalyst having an intrinsic viscosity of 0.2 to 20 dl/gm as measured in decalin at 135 deg C.

Also provided is a process for polymerizing or copolymerizing an olefin in the presence of the above catalyst.

There is provided a process for producing a cyclic olefin copolymer by copolymerizing (A) ethylene and (B) a particular cyclic olefin in the presence of (C) a metallocene catalyst and (D) a small amount of an .alpha.-olefin having 3 to 20 carbon atoms. According to the said process, said copolymer can be produced at a high activity and its molecular weight can be controlled in a wide range. The copolymer produced by the said process has excellent properties inherent to the cyclic olefin copolymer.

The cycloolefin resin compositions of the present invention comprise:[A] cycloolefin resin selected from (a-1) a cycloolefin random copolymer having recurring units derived from a cycloolefin of a specific structure, (a-2) a ring opening (co)polymer of the cycloolefin, (a-3) a hydrogenation product of the ring opening (co)polymer and (a-4) a graft-modified product of the random copolymer (a-1), the ring opening (co)polymer (a-2) and the hydrogenation product thereof (a-3);[B] at least one of (b-1) an unmodified elastomer, (b-2) a modified elastomer, (b-3) an unmodified crystalline polyolefin and (b-4) a modified crystalline polyolefin; and[C] a polyamide resin. Molded products formed from these cycloolefin resin compositions are excellent particularly in resistance to greases.
