There is disclosed a lubricant composition comprising major amount of a base oil and a minor amount of an additive composition comprising (i) a triazole compound substituted with an aryl moiety; (ii) at least one nitrogen containing compound chosen from an alkylated phenothiazine and a compound represented by the formula (I): wherein R0, R1 and R2 are each independently selected from the group consisting of an aryl moiety comprising from about 6 to about 30 carbon atoms, hydrogen, halogen, hydroxy, hydrocarbyl substituted hydrocarbyl, amino, amido, phosphoro, and sulfono, with the proviso that at least one of R0, R1 and R2 are chosen to be an aryl moiety comprising from about 6 to about 30 carbon atoms; ana (iii) a metal detergent with a soap/TBN ratio ranging from about 0.05 to about 1.5.

A composition prepared by reacting (A) an esterified carboxy-containing interpolymer, said interpolymer being derived from at least two monomers, (i) one of said monomers being at least one vinyl aromatic monomer and (ii) the other of said monomers being at least one alpha, beta-unsaturated acylating agent, and having, before esterification, {overscore (M)}n determined by gel permeation chromatography ranging from about 8,000 to about 350,000, wherein from about 80% to about 99% of the carboxylic groups of said interpolymer are esterified, wherein from about 80 to about 100% of the ester groups contain from 8 to about 23 carbon atoms and from 0 to about 20% of the ester groups contain from 2 to 7 carbon atoms, with (B) a hydrocarbyl substituted carboxylic acid or functional derivative thereof wherein the hydrocarbyl group comprises from about 10 to about 400 carbon atoms, and (C) an amine having an average of more than 1 condensable N—H group, in any order or simultaneously, or with the preformed reaction product of (B) and (C) wherein said preformed reaction product has at least one condensable N—H group. This invention relates to a lubricating composition comprising a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and at least one metal-free thiophosphorus acid ester, at least one amine salt of the thiophosphorus acid ester, or a mixture thereof, wherein the thiophosphorus acid ester contains at least one hydrocarbyl terminated oxyalkylene group, at least one hydrocarbyl terminated polyoxyalkylene group, or a mixture thereof. In one embodiment, the thiophosphorus acid ester is a thiophosphorus acid ester represented by the following formula ##STR1## wherein X.sub.1, X.sub.2, and X.sub.3 are oxygen or sulfur, provided that at least one of X.sub.1, X.sub.2, and X.sub.3 is sulfur; R.sub.1 is a hydrocarbyl group; R.sub.2 is an alkylene group; R.sub.3 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group; x is a number from 1 to about 40; and a is 0, 1, or 2, or at least one salt of the thiophosphorus acid ester. The lubricating compositions, functional fluids and greases have improved antiwear/extreme pressure properties and improved antioxidation properties. In functional fluids, the thiophosphorus acid esters and their salts act as antiwear agents and rust inhibitors.
