Abstract: This application discloses methods for creating self-organizing networks implemented on heterogeneous mesh networks. The self-organizing networks can include a computing cloud component coupled to the heterogeneous mesh network. In the methods and computer-readable mediums disclosed herein, a processor determines if a user equipment (UE) should hand over its service from a base station to a multi-radio access technology (RAT) node, based on heuristics including one or more of: a distance traveled over a time T1, an average speed over a time T2, a destination stored in internal memory within the UE, a speed limit measurement for a nearby road, a possible direction in which the UE could travel, a signal strength measurement for a servicing base station, and a signal strength measurement for the multi-RAT node. A position profile may be used to predict a future location of the UE.

Abstract: This invention discloses a mesh network comprised of at least two dynamic base station nodes, wherein the two dynamic base station nodes comprise each a multiple radio access technology architecture, the multiple radio access technology architecture comprising: at least two radio access technologies for providing access to a core network, and an abstraction layer communicatively coupled to the at least two radio access technologies for receiving and converting data into protocol agnostic data, wherein the first and second dynamic base station nodes are configured to: in response to a query regarding environmental conditions from a computing cloud component, send an environmental condition to the computing cloud component, receive an instruction from the computing cloud in response to the computing cloud component having processed the environmental condition, and change an operational parameter in response to the received instruction. The first and second dynamic base station nodes support at least two of a 3G RAT, a 4G RAT, and a 5G RAT.

Abstract: A method for authenticating radio access network devices is disclosed, comprising: authenticating, at a coordination server, a base station in a radio access network using a first authentication factor; selecting, following successful authentication of the base station using the first authentication factor, a challenge question based on historical information of the base station stored within a database; sending, from the coordination server to the base station, a request containing the challenge question to further authenticate the base station based on the historical information of the base station; receiving, from the base station at the coordination server, a response to the challenge question; verifying, at the coordination server, the correctness of the response using a key derived from the historical information; and granting the base station access to a core network of a mobile operator, thereby addressing security issues unsolved by one-factor authentication.

Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for enabling a mesh network node to switch from a base station role to a user equipment role relative to a second mesh network node, and vice versa. By switching roles in this manner, the mesh network node may be able to benefit from increased uplink or downlink speed in the new role. This role reversal technique is particularly useful when using wireless protocols such as LTE that are asymmetric and allow differing throughput on uplink and downlink connections. Methods for determining whether to perform role reversal are disclosed, and methods for using role reversal in mesh networks comprising greater than two nodes are also disclosed.
