Compositions comprising an elite germplasm exhibiting increased transformability are disclosed. Further provided are methods for breeding maize such that enhanced transformability traits may be transferred to a desired germplasm. The plants and methods of the invention represent a valuable new tool for the creation of elite transgenic plants, preferably having one or more added beneficial characteristics.
