A user terminal and method for controlling a display apparatus are provided. A user terminal includes a detector configured to detect a user or user interaction, and a controller configured to change a mode of the user terminal from a first sleep mode to a second sleep mode in response to an occurrence of a first event in which a user is detected by the detector while the user terminal is in the first sleep mode, and to change the mode of the user terminal from the second sleep mode to a standby mode in response to an occurrence of a second event in which a user manipulation intention is detected by the detector while the user terminal is in the second sleep mode.

The display apparatus includes a display panel, a chassis configured to support the display panel, a backlight unit configured to be installed on the chassis, and an electricity generator configured to use the backlight unit as a heat source to generate electricity. The electricity generator includes a heat transfer unit which contacts the backlight unit, at least one heat storage unit which contacts the heat transfer unit, and at least one thermoelectric device comprising a heat generator and a heat absorber contacting the heat transfer unit. An upgrading apparatus, a display apparatus, a control method thereof, and a display system are provided. The upgrading apparatus for the display apparatus includes: an interface which is connected to the display apparatus and communicates with the display apparatus; a video processor which processes a video signal corresponding to an image displayed by the display apparatus; and a controller which controls the video processor to process the video signal to be displayed by the display apparatus when the upgrading apparatus is connected to the display apparatus through the interface, and controls the upgrading apparatus to operate based on information received from the display apparatus. Thus, the upgrading apparatus operates based on the information of the display apparatus, thereby securing compatibility with the previous-version display apparatus and enhancing the stability of the operation.
