The apparatus has a plurality of patterns disposed on the surface region and optically coupled respectively to each of the twenty six key members. In a specific embodiment, the apparatus has a light emitting diode provided within a center region of the surface region to emit electromagnetic radiation. The electromagnetic radiation propagates from the light emitting diode through a portion of the thickness of the light guide to one or more of the plurality of patterns to direct one or more portions of the electromagnetic radiation to respective key pads for lighting the respective key pads.

In a touch panel assembly, the thickness of a touch panel is successfully reduced by using a touch panel 10 provided with no reinforcement member. A housing frame 50 that supports the components of a front light unit 20 in an integral manner is provided with a touch panel positioning mechanism, and the touch panel 10 is fixed to the positioning mechanism, whereby the absence of a reinforcement member is duly compensated for, thus ensuring the strength of the touch panel 10. Deformation of the touch panel 10 that occurs when the touch panel 10 is pressed for operation can be attenuated by a transparent buffer member 5 disposed between the touch panel 10 and a light conductor plate 22. Therefore, the touch panel 10 deformed is prohibited from contacting and damaging the light conductor plate 22, thus preventing the light conductor plate 22 from deteriorating in its functional performance. Consequently, reduction in dimension and reduction of the number of components can be achieved without deteriorating the functional performance of the touch panel assembly.

There is provided is a metal line structure in which no defect of blistering occurs on a surface of a Cu/Ni film or a Cu/Au/Ni film even if an Ni plating thickness is reduced. According to this metal line 1, in a Cu/Au/Ni film structure in which an Au film 13 and a Cu film 15 are successively laminated by electroless plating on an Ni film 12 formed by electroless plating, the Ni film 12 has a phosphorus content x of 10 wt %≦x≦15 wt %. It was discovered through experiments that the so-called high phosphorus content type Ni film 12 having a phosphorus content x of 10 to 15 percent by weight became a fine smooth film under a condition of a film thickness of 0.1 &mgr;m or greater.

There is provided a spread illuminating apparatus in which its components are reliably fixed and efficiency of light emission is improved. Frame sub-assemblies for covering peripheral portions of upper and lower surfaces of a transparent substrate and upper, lower and end surfaces of light reflection members are provided. The frame sub-assemblies are made of a metal plate and bent to be approximately U-shaped in section and the portions thereof covering the central portion of the transparent substrate, namely, covering the observation surface of the spread illuminating apparatus are cut away. The frame sub-assemblies are configured so as to constitute upper and lower halves, respectively, of a so-called picture frame, and each include a stopper for holding a spot-like light source in a predetermined position with respect to a light conductive member and stoppers for holding the transparent substrate in position with respect to a longitudinal direction of the light conductive member. Openings and projections are provided and engaged with each other to couple the frame sub-assemblies.
