A valve timing regulation system 10 regulates oil pressure supplied to advance chambers and retard chambers formed by a vane 29 and a housing 28 to advance or retard the vane 29 and change the open/close timing of the intake valve. The position of the vane 29 is fixed by inserting a lock pin 43 into an advance-side engagement hole 49A at the most advanced position. Engine stopping is effected so as to set the vane 29 at the middle position, while starting when the coolant temperature is low is effected after rotating the crankshaft backward by a prescribed angle to fix the vane 29 at the most advanced position and is effected when the temperature is high merely by cranking to fix the vane 29 at the most retarded position. Cold starting is easy when effected at the most advanced position because the compression pressure is high, while vibration at warm starting is reduced when starting is effected at the most retarded position because the compression pressure is reduced.

A exhaust side camshaft having a journal is provide for actuating the exhaust valve. A cylinder head and a bearing cap rotatably support the camshaft at its journal. A pulley is mounted on the distal end of the camshaft, and the pulley is rotatable relative to the camshaft. A belt connects the pulley to the crankshaft to transmit power from the engine to the pulley. The belt applies a force to the pulley and the camshaft. A ring gear is provided for changing the relative rotational relationship between the camshaft and the pulley. First and second chambers are defined for applying a hydraulic fluid pressure to the ring gear. First and second passages are defined in the camshaft, and the first and the second passages are connected to the first and second chambers, respectively. First and second conduits are formed in the cylinder head, and the first and second conduits are connected to the first and second passages, respectively. An oil pressure is supplied to the second chamber via the second conduit and the second passage to advance the valve timing of the exhaust valve with respect to the crankshaft. The second conduit and the second passage are connected at a position closer to the pulley than where the first conduit and the first passage are connected.

A fluid source is connected with the first changing means and the second changing means to supply fluid to the first changing means and the second changing means. An adjusting means adjusts the amount of the fluid supplied from the fluid source to the first changing means and the second changing means. A detecting means detects the running condition of the engine. A control means controls the adjusting means to change each valve performance so as to coincide the engine torque with the desired engine torque. The control means includes selecting means for selecting one of the valves based on the detected running condition of the engine. The selected valve is capable of coinciding the engine torque with the desired torque faster than the other one of valves to allow a larger amount of the fluid supplied to one of the changing means that is associated with the selected valve than the other one of the changing means.
