In a suspension system for a vehicle comprising a shock absorber of which damping force characteristics can be changed into four or more characteristics, detecting means detect the oscillation frequency range of the sprung member of the vehicle and a bumpy road. From the four or more damping force characteristics of the shock absorber, the number of characteristics on the higher level side are limited to two or so when the sprung member is in a low frequency oscillation range, that of the characteristics on the lower level side are limited to two or so when the sprung member is in a high frequency oscillation range, and that of the characteristics on the medium level side are limited to two or so when a road is bumpy. The damping force characteristic of the shock absorber is selected and changed on the basis of a given control rule only within the limited damping force characteristics. Thus, it is possible to prevent noise and oscillation from being caused by the large change of the damping force characteristic. Furthermore, there can be obtained comfortableness to ride in and stability on a high level.

A suspension system of a vehicle which judges the direction of a damping force of a shock absorber of damping force characteristic variable type, provided between the sprung member and the unsprung member, either oscillation-stimulating direction or oscillation-restraining direction with respect to vertical osciallation of the sprung member, and it also judges the size of the damping force of the shock absorber. The damping force characteristic of the shock absorber is set higher when it is larger than the predetermined value and it is set lower when it is less than the predertemined value. The predetermined value can be changed according to the road surface, oscillation-restraining energy becomes larger than the oscillation-stimulating energy thereby. Therefore, improvement of the comfortableness to ride in and running stability can be planned and also, noise and oscillation caused by unnecessary changes of the damping force characteristic of the shock absorber in a high oscillation frequency range due to road bumps can be reduced.

In addition, the threshold of the control rule is changed such that the damping force characteristic of the shock absorber can easily be changed into the higher or lower level side according to the rate of change in the predetermined running state. Thus, it is possible to prevent noise and oscillation from being caused by the large change of the damping force characteristic. The system calculates the desired vehicle distance according to the velocities of the driving vehicle and the vehicle ahead, and sets a warning distance which is longer than the desired vehicle distance. The warning distance is set in accordance with the driver's feeling. According to the present invention, the system is prevented from producing undesirable warning.
