摘要: An apparatus and method for collecting whole blood and then separating it into components for subsequent use or storage. A self-contained bag set is used to collect the sample, which may then be placed into a device adapted to fit into a centrifuge for separation of components. Each component is then sequentially extracted according to density, with a sensor present in the device to control the operation of valves directing the collection of each component. Each component may then be separated into its own storage container.

摘要: A device for producing fibrinogen includes a platen having a surface configured for heat exchange with a container, which is adhered to the platen by device of a vacuum and heat exchange allowing both cooling and heating to occur along the boundary between the container and the platen. The platen is operatively coupled to a device of rocking the platen about a horizontal axis and the container allows scavenging of a cryoprecipitate fibrinogen from the blood product for subsequent utilization. A method for fabricating fibrinogen is also disclosed, including the steps of receiving blood product in a container having a heat transfer surface thereon, adhering a container to a heat transfer platen, rocking the container and coating the interior of the container with blood product, transferring heat and thereby altering the temperature of the platen, sensing the temperature of the platen and monitoring the platen temperature, and coupling the heat transfer to the temperature sensor and cycling the blood product through a phase change.

摘要: An instrumentality for promulgating the cryoprecipitation of fibrinogen from a blood product. The instrumentality contemplates a container for the blood product, an apparatus for creating the fibrinogen within the container and a method of manipulating the container within the apparatus and subsequently after fibrinogen has been formed. The apparatus includes a receiver within which the container is supported, a motion transfer device for the receiver to impart motion to the container while simultaneously subjecting the container to a temperature differential to cause heat transfer. The motion imparted to the container results in a thin coating of the blood product being disposed on an interior surface of the container which, in turn, is exposed to a heat transfer fluid through the wall of the container. Successive coatings placed on an interior of the container are timed such that each coating is placed on a previous coating that has changed phase. Flexure of the container after the contents of the container have been frozen can occur by providing a vacuum within the container causing an implosion of frozen material. Subsequent phase change back to a liquid and then a second freeze/thaw followed by centrifugation causes a cryo-fraction to be precipitated therefrom. The container within which the blood product is housed includes an opening for admission of the blood product therewithin, an outlet for extraction of fibrinogen and access to a source which can provide a pressure differential vis a vis the interior and exterior of the container. Information of the temperature profile within the container may also be provided.

摘要: An apparatus and related method for the optimization of the cryopreservation of various types of cells, including but not limited to hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem and progenitor cells, and endothelial progenitor cells found in normal blood, placental/cord blood, bone marrow or the stromal vascular fraction of adipose tissue. The apparatus for cryopreservation of biological materials in a sterile environment comprises a cryopreservation workstation, a rigid disposable cartridge, and a freezing bag assembly. The apparatus and related method provide for the precise, temperature controlled, homogenously distributed introduction of a cryoprotectant containing dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) into a solution containing nucleated cells in a manner that provides a safe increase in osmotic pressure and a controlled release of exothermic heat within the cells as the DMSO penetrates the cell membrane and replaces water molecules prior to the freezing of the cells.

摘要: A sterile method for preparing stable thrombin component from a single donor's plasma in which the thrombin component is harvested simultaneously from the clotting and adhesive proteins component from the same donor plasma in less than one hour. The combined components provide an improved biological hemostatic agent and tissue sealant by virtue of its freedom from the risk of contaminating viruses or bacteria from allogenic human or bovine blood sources. The thrombin provides polymerization of the clotting and adhesive proteins in less than five seconds, and is sufficiently stable to provide that fast clotting over a six hour period. Further, the clotting times can be predictably lengthened by diluting the thrombin with saline.
