Abstract:
A method for providing paperboard to paperboard facing surfaces for forming an effective seal for cartons formed from a laminate of a relatively flexible fluid impervious material and a relatively rigid paperboard material.
Abstract:
An apparatus for feeding/heat sealing cartons along the feed path of a cartoning line is provided. A conveyor moves the cartons past the heat sealing station where an elongated nozzle assembly forms a heated air stream directed against the carton flap and the side of the carton to activate the coating to form an adhesive. A bypass valve and duct is provided to interrupt the flow of heated air in the event that the carton does not clear the activation zone in a predetermined time. Strategically placed heat shields and coolant passages are provided to further isolate the conveyor from the heat. The nozzle includes a slotted outlet with an elongated bar closely spaced above to deflect the heated air stream when a carton is present for adhesive activation; said bar having a tapered fin to form a modified air foil along the trailing edge to divide, recombine and compact the stream when a carton is not present. The upper feed belts of the conveyor are adjustable to adapt to cartons of various heights.
Abstract:
A multi page mailer type business form is constructed by applying a first adhesive pattern to the top sheet bottom face perimeter areas, a second adhesive pattern to the bottom sheet top face perimeter areas, and applying third and fourth adhesive patterns to the middle sheet top and bottom face perimeter areas respectively. Variable information is printed on the top, bottom and middle sheets including machine readable identification information (bar code) which is common to the sheets that are to be assembled into a final multi page mailer. The set is accumulated, and verified by scanning the identification information, and then the perimeter adhesive patterns are sealed. The adhesive is preferably pressure sensitive adhesive, and the final mailer produced has a book-like construction. The adhesive patterns are such that the top and bottom sheets can be provided in a stack without the perimeter adhesive patterns aligning, and the middle sheets can be provided in a separate stack. A four-part (or more) form may be constructed by slitting two sheets with adhesive patterns into four.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus is disclosed for providing a jet stream applied hot melt adhesive bead of consistent, uniform section to the interior surface of a paperboard cannister for the purpose of securing and sealing a metal or plastic and closure. Fluidized hot melt adhesive is delivered by a gear pump into a circulation loop which includes a jet nozzle supply spur. Electric solenoid valves control adhesive flow direction into the spur or circulation loop, alternatively. A variable flow restriction in the circulation loop downstream of the jet nozzle supply spur is adjusted to maintain substantially constant fluid pressure at the spur junction in either delivery mode.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for coating the interior edge of an open ended container with an adhesive strip or band. An open rim of a container abuts a flat surface on an adhesive applicator head. A flowable adhesive passes radially outwardly and thence axially, between the inner container rim surface and a part of the head, to deposit a band of adhesive, such as a hot melt adhesive, on the container inner surface. The flat surface of the head functions both to position the container relative to the head and to form a seal to thus permit adhesive coating up to the edge of the open container end.

An apparatus for processing objects includes means for orienting an object to a predetermined rotational position, and control means for controlling the operation of the orienting means for orienting the rotational position of the object.
Abstract:
Apparatus for folding box blanks wherein each blank comprises a first portion and one or more further portions to be folded inwardly to lie over the first portion in superimposed relationship therewith the apparatus including a conveyor for carrying the blanks successively through the apparatus during folding and means at the side of the conveyor for progressively manoeuvering the further portion or portions of each blank into the folded position as the blank is conveyed, a pair of elongate flat tongues adjacent the line along which the or each further portion is to be folded so as to hold the blank against the conveying surfaces, the tongues being spaced apart in their upstream region to prevent the further portion from falling inwardly and thus to control the folding movement, the tongues being held apart by a stud while the upper tongue can twist with respect to the lower tongue towards the downstream ends thereof to accommodate the progressively reducing angle between the first portion and the further portion as the latter is folded.
Abstract:
An inspection system for a variety of products, and in particular flat-folded corrugated boxes uses real-time statistical processing control. This control allows graphs to be derived from which to develop trends indicative of future flaws in the products. These flaws are automatically corrected once a trend has been established. Glue marks on flat-folded corrugated boxes are identified and measured by means of pixel count, thereby providing very accurate depiction of the amount of glue on a box so that accurate comparison to a standard configuration can be made.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method of forming a pre-wrapped gift package which appears to have been hand wrapped. The method includes forming a sheet of box construction material with decorative paper affixed thereto into a box tube by joining ends thereof. The box construction material is properly creased and provided with flaps so that a consumer may fold the flattened box tube into a box so that the end flaps form ends of the box and the decorative paper forms a pair of paper flaps which may be overlapped and taped. A flattened pull bow is provided to form a gift wrapping kit with the flattened box tube which may be distributed and displayed in a flat package. A flattened, collapsed open box with the same volume as the pre-wrapped gift package is attached to the outside of the assembly in such a manner that a prospective purchaser may erect the open box and use it to determine whether or not the pre-wrapped gift package is the proper size for the gift the purchaser desires to be packaged. A device which provides an easy way of loading an open ended pre-wrapped gift box is also provided.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for folding by approximately 180.degree. a first surface portion of a blank on a rotating drum about a score line onto a second surface portion of the blank. A shaping rail comprises a first surface for acting on a first side of the first portion of the blank to initiate folding the first portion about the score line, a second surface for acting on a second side, opposite the first side, of the first portion of the blank to complete the approximately 180.degree. folding of the first portion about the score line, and a spiral edge for transferring the first portion of the blank from the first surface to the second surface. A first inner guide rail comprising a cylindrical outer surface facing the second surface of the shaping rail and a second outer guide rail having a cylindrical inner surface facing the first surface of the shaping rail are provided to further guide the blank during folding.
