A computer controlled, laboratory heat-sealing machine is employed as a quality control device to ensure that adequate heat seals are formed under pre-defined and outputted pressure, dwell time and temperature parameters. The apparatus includes sensors for monitoring temperature and pressure conditions throughout the sealing dwell period. The clamping pressure is constantly adjusted to be maintained at a preset level by sensing the clamping pressure and controlling the top heat-sealing bar through an eccentrically driven crankshaft linkage. Load cell arrangements for monitoring pressure in high and low pressure ranges are also disclosed.

Method and apparatus for heat shrinking projecting edges of heat shrinkable (but unshrunken) film onto articles such as cylindrical containers. The film is tightly wrapped around the bodies of the articles and the overlapping ends are held together by glue. The projecting edges of the articles are then heat shrunk onto the shoulders and/or curved lower ends of the bodies as the containers are transported and are caused to spin while being transported. In so doing the hot air is blown in a direction such that it does not blow directly onto the glue at the side seams. This may be accomplished by using a circular, turret type transport and by having blowers which blow hot air obliquely, rather than radially at the articles. Where the articles are closely packed, each article acts to shield the next article when its side seam is parallel to the flow of hot air.

A machine and method for applying heat shrink labels or the like to articles such as containers having cylindrical body portions and an end portion or portions adjoining the body portion and sloping inwardly therefrom. The label has a length such that its leading end overlaps the trailing end and a seam is formed at the overlap. The label is secured to the article by adhesive between the leading end and the container and by adhesive between the overlapping leading end and trailing end. The label is of a width such that it projects beyond the junction or junctions of the end portion or portions with the body portion, resulting in free standing edge or edges which are then heat shrunk onto the container by heat from an external source. A tongue is interposed between the heat source and the seam at each free standing edges or edges. This tongue serves as a heat shield to moderate application of heat to the seam. Most advantageously the end of each tongue is wedge shaped so that as it is extended it acts as a wedge to urge the free standing edge toward the article. In a preferred embodiment of the invention heat is applied in the form of hot air in stages such that the free standing edge or edges are shrunk commencing with their junctions with the container and progressing to the outer edges whereby no air is entrapped.

The present disclosure relates to a cooling device for cooling seals in a film in a form-fill-seal machine, comprising cooling means comprising at least one passage guiding a cooling fluid on to at least one side seal formed in said film, said film defining a forward movement direction, and wherein said at least one passage of said cooling means is arranged substantially in the same forward movement direction of the film. In at least one embodiment, the seals will reach the first transfer roller in a cold enough state so that a seal is not formed between the two faces of the side creases, even at high working speeds.

A heat shrink apparatus for heat shrinking a shrink film to a bladder. The heat shrink apparatus may include a support structure, a bladder support system, and a heat chamber. The bladder support system for supporting the bladder thereon may have two spaced apart parallel rows of a plurality of resilient members pivotally and/or resiliently attached to the support structure. The heat chamber may be hollow with opposing end openings and may have one or more heating elements therein. The heat chamber may translate over the shrink film and the bladder along the support structure between the two spaced apart parallel rows, shrinking the shrink film to the bladder. As the heat chamber translates, it may contact ends of the resilient members, thereby pivoting or deflecting the resilient members from a first position to a second position such that the heat chamber can pass between the two parallel rows.

The invention relates to a device for wrapping contaminant or non-contaminant waste resulting from the medical treatment of humans or animals, as well as household waste. The device shown in FIG. 1 consists of a housing (1) used as a frame supporting a dispenser (2) for a heat-sealable plastic sleeve (3) forming a receptacle in which the waste may be deposited, a driving mechanism (4) for moving the sleeve, a heat-sealing mechanism (5), and a removable storage receptacle (6). The device is characterized in that the size of the wrapping may be selectively adapted to that of the waste objects. The device is useful for confining waste in wrappings that are impervious to volatile fumes, odours and liquids regardless of the position of the wrappings during storage and transport.

Apparatus for heat sealing the respective layers of film in a pair of hems in a moving web of film in the manufacture of draw tape bags. A pair of hot air hem sealer units is provided each of the units including a hot air hem sealer heat exchanger having a plurality of nozzles which direct hot air against a continuously moving film. The nozzles are in line with film movement and the film is backed up by a metal plate positioned between the hems. Following the heating phase cool compressed air is directed against the film in the heated area to cool the film prior to contact with the hem seal on the other side of the bag. The heat exchanger includes a plurality of circumferential grooves which deliver hot air to the nozzles. A thermocouple controls the temperature of the hot air.

Transverse seals are formed across the tube at package length intervals with a unit to be packaged in the tube between successive transverse seals. The gas may be a preservative gas for preservation of the unit in each package. Additionally, preservative gas may be introduced into the tube downstream from said sealing station.
