    Abstract: A gummer roll apparatus preferably for applying gum to envelopes during continuous processing and operation of a gumming machine, has a pick-up roll, a meter roll and a transfer roll that transfers a gum or adhesive such as latex to a gummer roll. The pick-up roll and meter roll rotate in opposite directions and are in a skidding-like contact due to different rotational speeds whereby excess gum or adhesive is removed from the pick-up roll and returned to a gum box or trough with a minimum of foaming in the gum box and on the pick up roll.

    Abstract: A method and adhesive pattern for reverse folding and sealing a carton that enables the carton to be sift proof, the method including providing a carton having a first open end including first and second inside and outside major flaps and a pair of opposing minor flaps. The minor flaps and outside major flap are initially folded in an open position and the first inside major flap is folded to cover the open end of the carton. Multiple beads of adhesive are then applied with a non-contact application head to selected areas of the first inside major flap, the second outside major flap and both of the minor flaps. The minor flaps are then folded on top of the first inside major flap and the second outside major flap is folded on top of the minor flaps to provide sealing contact between the flaps about the entire periphery of the first open end so that the carton is sift proof.

    Abstract: Apparatus and a method for folding flaps onto panels formed in folded box blanks, particularly those constructed from corrugated cardboard. As a blank advances along a paper line, a first station engages leading edges of the flaps and forces the flaps into an intermediate plane representing a partial folding operation. Then a second station controls the relative velocities of the flaps along the paper line with respect to the panels to compensate for skew that can occur in other stations. A final station completes the folding operation. The resulting fold is made about an axis, or fold line. if the flap is to be folded about a prestamped score line, the fold and score lines are coextensive. Typically the flaps are folded 180.degree. and the first station produces intermediate folds that are displaced 90.degree. from the panels.

    Abstract: A method of forming a sift-proof seal for closure of a box having a plurality of folded flaps, the seal being formed by an adhesive strip pattern. The flaps are moved linearly toward a plurality of nozzles which extrude adhesive in a pattern of closely spaced adhesive strips. A flap having such an adhesive pattern is brought into contact with a second flap to compress the pattern of adhesive therebetween. The spacing between adjacent strips of adhesive is such that the folding of the flap causes merging of the adhesive to form a continuous strip of adhesive, thereby forming a box closure. The adhesive pattern is limited to a first outside edge of the first flap, with each remaining outside edges receiving a sift-proof continuous line of adhesive.

    Abstract: In the forming of cartons, a water-based adhesive, e.g. an aqueous-dispersed polyvinylacetate, is applied as an atomized spray by guns to selected parts of a carton blank of uncoated board and partially dried by hot gas (air) jets, and the carton is erected by forcing the carton blank by a punch through a forming die so that the selected parts are pressed briefly against cooperating parts of the carton to secure them together, by means of projections on the punch and pressure members forming part of the die. The atomized spraying followed by hot air drying of the adhesive enables adhesion to be effected by very brief pressure, and the method can thus be used for high speed production of cartons of uncoated board.

    Abstract: A dripless, easily cleaned glue applicator for a machine for making two-piece paper cups comprises an outer body member in which there is a cavity that opens to a slot in a flat bottom surface of the member. The slot has a shape and size conforming to an area of glue to be applied. An inner member in the body member forces the longitudinally central portion of a resilient foam pad to bulge down through the slot and clamps the pad to the outer body member. The inner member also provides a glue chamber that is communicated with a pressurized source of glue and from which numerous bores, spaced along the length of the inner member, open downwardly to the pad. A top plate on the outer body member closes its cavity, holds the inner member in clamping relation to the outer body member, and provides for mounting the applicator.

    Abstract: An apparatus for producing a carton in a folded condition for storage and handling and whereby the carton can then be unfolded for use. The apparatus is designed for handling different types of blanks which, generally speaking, include a plurality of panels comprising side, top and bottom panels of the carton.
