Such membranes comprise linear low or linear medium density polyethylene or high molecular weight high density polyethylene as a binder and can incorporate a wide variety of ion exchange resin materials. The membranes can be fabricated using extrusion or other melt processing procedures to produce a product, which upon conditioning in water, exhibits properties adapted for use in numerous applications.

The improved electrically regenerable demineralizing apparatus uses ion exchangers that are produced by radiation-initiated graft polymerization and that are packed in the demineralizing compartment of an electrodialyzer. The apparatus may use a mosaic ion exchanger that consists of alternately arranged cation- and anion-exchange groups. Alternately, the apparatus may have an immobilized amino acid packed in the demineralizing compartment of an electrodialyzer. The apparatus maintains consistent water quality for a prolonged time, is capable of treating from small to large volumes of water and yet is easy to service and manage.

A unique polymer was synthesized via copolymerization of vinylpyridine and acetoxystyrene under radical-initiated conditions followed by acidic or basic hydrolysis of the acetoxy group to afford the corresponding hydroxy group. The built-in acid-base dual functionality (phenolic and pyridyl units) in this polymer backbone gives rise to its unique solubility properties over a wide pH range in both aqueous and non-aqueous media. Due to its amphoteric nature, this polymer finds application as an anti-stat, viscosity modifier, and/or ion-exchange resin.

Improved beads for use in the interfacial separation of anion and cation exchange beads are spherical, hydrolytically stable polymer beads having a controlled particle size, controlled density and a water wettability. The beads comprise a hydrophobic monomer, a hydrophilic monomer and a crosslinking monomer. The interface beads allow for the preparation of mixed-bed exchange resin compositions having improved life cycles and improved resin efficiencies.
