New and improved method and apparatus for automatic, periodic baseline and standard calibration of analysis results recording means which record the results of sample analyses performed by multichannel sample analysis means in accordance with the output of the latter are provided to compensate for drift in said analysis means output, and comprise the conditioning of said sample analysis means and the adjustment of said output to a desired value for baseline calibration for each of said channels, the conditioning of said sample analysis means and the adjustment of said output to a desired value for standard calibration for each of said channels, the comparison of said output with said desired value thereof for baseline calibration for each of said channels and, if drift has occurred, the generation of information to drive said output to said desired value for baseline calibration, the comparison of said output with said desired value thereof for standard calibration for each of said channels and, if drift has occurred, the generation of information to drive said output to said desired value thereof for standard calibration, the storing of said baseline and standard calibration information for each of said channels for repeated reuse in sequence with channel changes during sample analysis operation of said sample analysis means, and the updating of said standard and baseline calibration information for each of said channels by the standard and baseline calibration information generated during subsequent operation of said calibration apparatus.

A compact combination blood cell count and immunoassay apparatus for measuring drawn whole blood specimen includes a load station for receiving the whole blood specimen and a nozzle member that can selectively withdraw whole blood from the blood specimen. A blood cell count section and an immunoassay section are mounted along a unitary path of movement of the nozzle member so that a single nozzle member may be used for transporting the whole blood to the respective blood cell count section and immunoassay section. A controller can automatically direct a transport mechanism to use only the whole blood and to perform various steps of adding dilution liquid and reagents, along with appropriate washing of the nozzle and sample cells to insure an automatic operation. A hematozorit value can be determined from the blood cell count signal and used to correct the immunoassay signal when whole blood is used.

A formulation for colorimetric determination of the concentration of cyanuric acid compounds, particularly in swimming pool water, comprises an aqueous solution of a stabilizer, monoethanolamine and a thymolsulfonphthalein compound which, in aqueous solution with monoethanolamine, will exhibit different characteristic color shades dependent upon the concentration of cyanuric acid compounds. The stabilizer is a water-soluble, ultraviolet light absorbing material which is a condensation product of a disulfonic acid derivative with stilbene, stilbyle or their derivatives.A method of testing for cyanuric acid compound concentrations is to mix the formulation with a sample of swimming pool water and compare the resultant characteristic color shade with a standard color shade.

A test system for the semi-automatic analysis of chemical constituents in a test fluid which comprises test devices having test reagents and code means associated therewith and an instrument which receives the test devices and is programmed by the device code means for automatically reading the particular test reagents associated with the particular test device being used. Preferably the test reagents are in a dry form, immobilized in or on a carrier member which upon contact with the test fluid can be manually presented to the instrument. Another preferable embodiment of the present device comprises the use of the code means to calibrate the instrument each time a test device is introduced thereto.

A COMPACT INSTRUMENT FOR MEASURING THE HEMOGLOBIN CONTENT OF WHOLE BLOOD, PARTICULARLY ARRANGED FOR THE RAPID ANALYSIS OF A MINUTE SAMPLE OF A PATIENT''S BLOOD SUPPLIED IMMEDIATELY AFTER COLLECTION, BY A DOCTOR IN HIS OWN OFFICE. THE INSTRUMENT IS SO ARRANGED THAT IT MAY BE FULLY AUTOMATED, TO MAKE THE HEMOGLOBIN DETERMINATION AFTER A BLOOD SAMPLE HAS BEEN DELIVERED TO IT, AND TO PROVIDE AN ANALYSIS FOR THE DOCTOR''S USE WITHIN A FEW MINUTES. THE INSTRUMENT UTILIZES A PUMP WHICH DELIVERES TO AND MIXES WITH THE BLOOD SAMPLE IN A PHOTOMETER EXAMINATION CELL, AN ACCURATELY AND CONTINUOUSLY MEASURED AMOUNT OF AN AQUEOUS REAGENT, UNTIL THE VOLUME OF REAGENT ADDED CAUSES THE SAMPLE TO MATCH PHOTOMETRICALLY A STRANDED SAMPLE. THE HEMOGLOBIN CONTENT IS DIRECTLY SHOWN IN APPROPRIATE UNITS ON A METER OR READOUT DEVICES AT THE COMPLETION OF A CYCLE. IN THE FULLY AUTOMATED FORM OF THE DEVICE, A COMPLETE ANALYSIS CYCLE LEAVES THE INSTURMENT CLEANED OUT AND READY TO MAKE ANOTHER ANALYSIS UPON RECEPTION OF ANOTHER BLOOD SAMPLE.

A METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR STANDARDIZING TWO DENSITOMETERS TO HAVE THE SAME READING FOR SAMPLES HAVING THE SAME OPTICAL DENSITY EVEN THOUGH BOTH DENSITOMETERS ARE NOT IDENTICALLY CALIBRATED BY READING THE SAMPLE WITH ONE DENSITOMETER AND NOTING ITS DENSITY. AN OPAQUE SCREEN HAVING AN APERTURE IS THEN POSITIONED BEFORE THE LIGHT ENTRANCE OF THE DENSITOMETER WITH THE SIZE OF THE APERTURE BEING ADJUSTED TO PRODUCE THE SAME DENSITOMETER READING AS THE SAMPLE. AN APAQUE SCREEN HAVING THE SAME SIZE OPENING IS THEN PLACED BEFORE THE LIGHT ENTRANCE OF THE SECOND DENSITOMETER AND THIS SECOND DENSITOMETER IS ADJUSTED TO HAVE THE SAME REFLECTIVITY READING AS THE FIRST DENSITOMETER. A SAMPLE ACCORDINGLY HAVING THE SAME OPTICAL DENSITY WILL BE READ IDENTICALLY BY BOTH METERS. ALSO, THE OPENINGS, ACCURATELY SIZED FOR DESIRED DENSITY READINGS MAY BE USED FOR CALIBRATING A DENSITOMETER.

A CONTINUOUS METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE STABILITY OF NITROGLYCERIN BY DETECTING THE PRESENCE OF NITRITE ION THROUGH A COLOR TEST WHICH CONSISTS OF ADDING TO THE NITRATE ESTER A COLOR PRODUCING REAGENT SUCH AS A GRIESS TYPE REAGENT, CONTAINING (1) SULFANILIC ACID, AND (2) 1-NAPHTHYLAMINE, 1-NAPHTHYLAMINE OXALATE OR N-(1-NAPTHYL)ETHYLENEDIAMINE DIHYDROCHLORIDE AND DETECTING THE COLOR CHANGE.
