Abstract: Unique systems, methods, techniques and apparatuses of a synchronous reluctance machine (SynRM) control are disclosed. One exemplary embodiment is a control device structured to operate a converter coupled to a synchronous reluctance machine and receive measurements of current. The device comprises a converter controller structured to detect a power supply restoration, operate the converter so as to transmit a series voltage vectors relative to the stationary reference frame to the stator of the synchronous reluctance machine, receive current measurements following the transmission of each of the voltage vectors, estimate the rotor position using the characteristics of the voltage vector and the received current measurements corresponding to at least one voltage vector, estimate the rotor speed using the characteristics of the voltage vectors and the received current measurements corresponding to at least two voltage vectors, and operate the converter so as to apply voltage to the stator.

Abstract: One embodiment is a unique Vernier machine comprising a rotor and a stator. The rotor comprises a back portion and a plurality of permanent magnets. The stator comprises a plurality of ferromagnetic arm structures, a plurality of ferromagnetic pole structures extending from each of the ferromagnetic arm structures in a direction toward the permanent magnets, and a plurality of conductive windings disposed about respective ones of the plurality of ferromagnetic arm structures. The ferromagnetic pole structures are structured to collect magnetic flux from the permanent magnets. The ferromagnetic pole structures of each of said ferromagnetic arm structures are spaced apart from one another according to a non-uniform pattern such that the ferromagnetic pole structures of a given ferromagnetic arm structure have substantially the same angular position relative to the permanent magnets radially opposite from the ferromagnetic pole structures of the given ferromagnetic arm structure.

Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a padmount transformer. The padmount transformer includes an electrical distribution transformer housed in a cabinet that can be mounted on a ground level platform or pad. High/medium voltage connectors of the electrical distribution transformer can connect to high/medium voltage terminals of a power supply network. Low voltage connectors of the electrical distribution transformer are configured to connect to low voltage terminals of one or more loads coupled to respective renewable energy sources. The high/medium voltage connectors and the low voltage connectors are housed in the cabinet. An energy storage apparatus is housed in the cabinet and is connected with the low voltage connectors for supplying power to the loads. Power can be supplied to the energy storage apparatus by the renewable energy sources. An inverter is operable for commanding the power supply direction at the energy storage apparatus and a control unit is configured to control the inverter.

Abstract: A method for controlling an electrical converter comprises the acts of determining an error value based on a difference between an estimated output value and a reference output value, the estimated output value being based on measurements in the electrical converter; comparing the error value with an error band and in the case of the error value exceeds the error band, controlling the electrical converter by switching to a different control scheme. The converter is controlled with the modified pre-calculated switching by determining a pre-calculated switching sequence for the converter based on an actual state of the electrical converter, the switching sequence comprising a sequence of switching transitions of the converter; modifying the pre-calculated switching sequence by modifying transition times of switching transitions of the pre-calculated switching sequence, such that the error value is minimized; and applying at least a part of the modified switching sequence to the electrical converter.

Abstract: An assembly includes a cabinet having an interior and a door to gain access to the interior. An intelligent electronic device (IED) is within the interior of the cabinet and includes inputs providing electrical connections to the IED, pushbuttons to provide user input to the IED, a display module including a display, a component, and a timer circuit. The timer circuit powers the component OFF or places it in a reduced power state when not in use after a certain amount of time. A switch is associated with the door and is electrically connected to at least one of the inputs so that when the display module is powered OFF or in the reduced power state and when the door is opened, the switch causes a signal to be sent to the timer circuit to cause the timer circuit to power the component fully ON.

Abstract: According to one aspect of the teachings herein, various feeder connection arrangements and architectures are disclosed, for collecting electricity from wind turbines in an offshore collection grid that operates at a fixed low frequency, e.g., at one third of the targeted utility grid frequency. Embodiments herein detail various feeder arrangements, such as the use of parallel feeder connections and cluster-based feeder arrangements where a centralized substation includes a common step-up transformer for outputting electricity at a stepped-up voltage, for low-frequency transmission to onshore equipment. Further aspects relate to advantageous generation arrangements, e.g., tower-based arrangements, for converting wind power into electrical power using, for example, medium-speed or high-speed gearboxes driving generators having a rated electrical frequency for full-power output in a range from about 50 Hz to about 150 Hz, with subsequent conversion to the fixed low frequency for off-shore collection.
