Abstract:
A magnetic array having a collar with a plurality of magnets mounted to the inner surface of the collar. The magnets are positioned in a spaced alignment around the collar with all having the same polarity facing toward the center of the collar. Shielding is used to control and/or contain the direction of the magnetic force and the array is covered with a plastic coating.
Abstract:
The invention provides a method, apparatus and system for separating blood and other types of cellular components, and can be combined with holographic optical trapping manipulation or other forms of optical tweezing. One of the exemplary methods includes providing a first flow having a plurality of blood components; providing a second flow; contacting the first flow with the second flow to provide a first separation region; and differentially sedimenting a first blood cellular component of the plurality of blood components into the second flow while concurrently maintaining a second blood cellular component of the plurality of blood components in the first flow. The second flow having the first blood cellular component is then differentially removed from the first flow having the second blood cellular component. Holographic optical traps may also be utilized in conjunction with the various flows to move selected components from one flow to another, as part of or in addition to a separation stage.
Abstract:
The invention features devices and methods for the deterministic separation of particles. Exemplary methods include the enrichment of a sample in a desired particle or the alteration of a desired particle in the device. The devices and methods are advantageously employed to enrich for rare cells, e.g., fetal cells, present in a sample, e.g., maternal blood and rare cell components, e.g., fetal cell nuclei. The invention further provides a method for preferentially lysing cells of interest in a sample, e.g., to extract clinical information from a cellular component, e.g., a nucleus, of the cells of interest. In general, the method employs differential lysis between the cells of interest and other cells (e.g., other nucleated cells) in the sample.
Abstract:
A magnetic device adapted for various engine oil filtering apparatuses is proposed in the present invention. It includes an elastic metal plate; multiple holding bases, each of which has at least a containing portion, the holding bases being disposed on the elastic metal plate; and multiple magnets disposed in the containing portions of the holding bases respectively. The magnetic device has a sectional design and has various flexible combinations. Hence, it is more applicable and reduces the costs of production.
Abstract:
A fluid filter for use with a fluid having particulate material includes a housing having an internal surface having a set of depressions formed therein to trap particulate material in the fluid, and a filter media disposed in the housing to filter the fluid. In some embodiments, the fluid filter may be a transmission filter or an engine filter. In addition, a transmission system includes a transmission pan having an internal surface with a set of depressions formed therein, and a suction side transmission filter disposed in a transmission pan wherein the suction side transmission filter also has a filter housing having an internal surface with a set of depressions formed therein. Further, a magnet may be coupled to the depressions to aid in the capture and retention of ferromagnetic particles.
Abstract:
Process for converting synthesis gas to hydrocarbons which comprises contacting a gaseous stream comprising synthesis gas, at an elevated temperature and pressure, with a suspension comprising a particulate Fischer-Tropsch catalyst having a particle size in the range 5 microns to 500 microns, suspended in a liquid medium, in a system comprising at least one high shear mixing zone and a reactor vessel. The suspension and the gaseous stream is passed through the high shear mixing zone(s) wherein the gaseous stream is broken down into gas bubbles. The suspension having gas bubbles dispersed therein is discharged from the high shear mixing zone(s) into the reactor vessel, and suspension comprising the particulate Fischer-Tropsch catalyst suspended in the liquid medium and liquid hydrocarbon products is withdrawn from the reactor vessel and at least a portion of the suspension is recycled to the high shear mixing zone(s) via an external conduit at a flow rate of at least 10,000 m3 of suspension per hour. A side stream from the suspension flowing through the external conduit is taken and passed directly to a filtration unit.
