Abstract: A catheter assembly having a sheath, which includes a side wall enclosing an interior bore, and a distal region. The assembly also has a bendable catheter tube, which is carried for sliding movement in the interior bore. A pull wire also runs through the interior bore of the sheath, preferably within a lumen. The catheter tube has a distal portion with a coupling which joins the distal portion of the catheter tube and the distal portion of the pull wire. Relative movement of the pull wire and the sheath causes bending of the catheter tube outwardly through the opening, in response to sliding movement of the catheter tube within the interior bore toward the distal region of the sheath.

Abstract: An electrosurgical working end for instant and automatic modulation of active Rf density in a targeted tissue volume. The working end of the probe of the present invention defines a tissue-engagement plane that is adapted to contact the targeted tissue. The cross-section energy delivery apparatus comprises (i) a conductive surface engagement plane for tissue contact, (ii) a substrate comprising a medial conductive matrix of a temperature sensitive resistive material; and (iii) an inner or core conductive material (electrode) that is coupled to an Rf source and controller. Of particular interest, the medial conductive matrix comprises a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) that exhibits very large increases in resistivity as it increases beyond a selected temperature, which is described as a switching range. The PTC material is selected and fabricated to define a switching range that approximates a particular thermally-mediated therapy. In a method of use, it can be understood that the engagement plane will apply active Rf energy to the engaged the tissue temperature elevates the medial PTC conductive layer to its switching range. Thereafter, Rf current flow from the core conductive to the engagement surface will be instantly modulated to maintain tissue temperature at the switching range. Moreover, the conductive matrix effectively functions as a resistive electrode to thereafter passively conduct thermal energy to the engaged tissue above its switching range. Thus, the working end can modulate the energy application to tissue between active Rf heating and passive conductive heating of the targeted tissue to maintain a targeted temperature level.

Abstract: This invention relates to medical systems and least invasive techniques for treatment of hypervascularized tumors, both benign and cancerous, by catheter-based embolization of vessels that feed the tumor, for example in a patient's lung. The least invasive techniques typically can be performed by interventional radiologists for treatment of lung tumors. The invention also can be used to treat hypervascularized tumor tissues in other locations in a patient's body, for example, uterine fibroids and liver tumors.

Abstract: A bracelet made of links has two rows of side links forming the edges of the bracelet and at least one row of central links. The side links have each one two blind bores opening on the inner side directed towards the central links and the central links are traversed each one by two bores extending therethrough. Free pins are placed freely but without any looseness in the bores of the lateral links and of the central links and they have, at each one of their ends, a groove. The side links have, opening on their lower face, at least one recess giving access to the grooves of two adjoining pins. Blocking members are designed for being inserted into the recesses of the side links and they include retaining members co-operating with the grooves of the pins.

Abstract: An apparatus includes an expandable member. The expandable member is sized to be positionable in a sphincter. An energy delivery device is positioned on a surface of the expandable member. The energy delivery device has a configuration that provides sufficient energy delivery to create lesions in the interior of the sphincter. When the expandable member is removed from the sphincter, the sphincter returns to its closed or contracted configuration.

Abstract: A pocket suitable for incorporation in garments, luggage items, personal accessories or the like is provided with an active mechanism and control apparatus to close the pocket. Such closing action may be triggered manually but can also be triggered automatically when the pocket is moved away from an upright orientation or experiences a jolting action. In one embodiment the closing action is performed by a length of shape memory material which contracts when heated to pull the pocket front panel top portion against the rear panel top portion and close the pocket opening.

Abstract: An exercise kit includes a lightweight garment having at least a pair of elongated pockets. An elongated bent shape memory member is secured within desired ones of the pockets to provide resistance when deformed and no resistance when restored resiliently to an original shape. The method of using the kit includes performing physical activities that includes movement of at least some portion of the body sufficient to cause the plastic member to deform and to provide sufficient resistance to the movement to tone the muscles of the user experiencing such resistance. In another embodiment an exercise kit includes at least one elongated shape memory member having a distal end pair of slots and a proximate end pair of slots. A pair of securing straps conformed to fit within respective ones of the slots helps secure the shape memory member in a position extending longitudinally along a limb portion of a user. The shape memory member is resilient and provides resistance when deformed and no resistance when restored to an original shape. The method of using the kit includes looping the straps through the slot pairs and then fastening them at the upper and lower portions of the limb of a user. The user then performs physical activities including movement of at least some portion of the limb sufficient to cause the shape memory member to deform and to provide sufficient resistance to the movement to tone the muscles of the user experiencing such resistance.

Abstract: A left atrium ablation catheter (4), including a sheath (8) and a deflectable electrophysiology catheter (10) housed within the sheath, is used to ablate coronary tissue at a target site within the left atrium (LA) of a heart. The electrophysiology catheter has ablation electrodes (24) along the tip (10). The ablation catheter is introduced into the right atrium (RA) through either the superior vena cava (SVC) or the inferior vena cava (IVC). The distal open end of the sheath is guided through a punctured hole in the interatrial septum and into the left atrium. The distal end (20) of the sheath is either precurved or is steerable so the electrode tip can be directed to the coronary target site in the left atrium. The electrode tip is sized and configured to create the desired lesion at the target site without movement of the electrode tip.

Abstract: Construction of fluid conduit systems in printed circuit boards or other dielectric laminate substrates is disclosed. The fluid conduits can be angled or curved to provide greater directional control of fluid flow. Conduits are created by lamination of a first laminate layer and a second laminate layer. The first laminate layer is composed of a dielectric base material impregnated with a resin, with a first aperture defined therethrough, while the second laminate layer has a second aperture. The second aperture is positioned with respect to the first aperture to only partially overlap, together defining an angled conduit. Fluid flow through the conduits can be controlled using microdevice valves.
