Abstract:
Some demonstrative embodiments of the invention include an illumination-based liquid disinfection device. The disinfection device may include, for example, a light transparent conduit to carry a flowing liquid to be disinfected, the conduit having an inlet to receive the liquid and an outlet to discharge the liquid, a substantially light transparent sleeve having external dimensions smaller than the internal dimensions of the conduit, the sleeve positioned within the conduit substantially perpendicular to the axis of symmetry of the conduit and a light source positioned within the sleeve.
Abstract:
A reinforced intermodal container has a corrugated steel wall with an outer side and an inner side. In a length direction the corrugations have alternating inboard and outboard flat panels with adjacent panels linked by web portions. A strengthening structure is welded to the container wall which provides flanges extending generally perpendicularly to the general plane of the wall. The flanges extend between plates welded to the inside faces of the outboard panels and flat strengthening plates welded to the inside faces of the inboard panels. The strengthening structure does not alter the outside width of the container in comparison with the outside width of the unreinforced container. The strengthening structure reduces the inside volume of the container by only a small amount compared with the volume of the unreinforced container.
Abstract:
Systems and methods for treating water may involve a first electrochemical separation module that includes at least one ion exchange membrane having a first set of performance characteristics, and a second electrochemical separation module that includes at least one ion exchange membrane having a second set of performance characteristics that is different than the first set of performance characteristics. Performance characteristics may relate to at least one of water loss, electrical resistance, and permselectivity. Staged treatment systems and methods may provide improved efficiency.
Abstract:
A method for removing oil from a body of water including providing a matrix having a longitudinally-directed column defined by oil-absorbing and/or oil-adsorbing blankets each affixed independently of each other to a connecting strip that extends along the length of the column; deploying the matrix to a body of water to bring the column into contact with the body of water; inducing tension in the connecting strip to move blankets of the column in unison relative to the body of water; collecting oil with the first and second blankets; and removing the blankets and at least a portion of the oil collected thereby. Also, an oil spill removal system including such a matrix and in which, during matrix movement in the longitudinal direction, drag on a following blanket of a matrix column is carried by the connecting strip rather than by a preceding blanket of that column.
Abstract:
The present disclosure is directed at a compression device for compressing a stack to prevent leaks and at an apparatus including the stack and the compression device. The stack includes a pair of rigid end plates located at opposing ends of the stack, a plurality of membrane bounded compartments layered between one of the rigid end plates and the other of the rigid end plates and fluid manifolds extending through the membrane bound compartments. The compression device is fixedly coupled to opposing ends of the pair of rigid end plates and includes compression members movable to compress one of the rigid end plates towards the other of the rigid end plates. The compression members are positioned to apply force to the stack in the vicinity of the fluid manifolds.
Abstract:
A filtration device with filters that can be backwashed with purified water switches between water purification, first backwashing, and second backwashing modes, depending on a pivot position of a valve. During the first backwashing mode, while a tap water inlet is in communication with a second tap water passage port, first and second purified water passage ports are blocked from communication with a purified water outlet, so purified water from a second filter flows backward through a first filter and is discharged from a drain water outlet. During the second backwashing mode, while the tap water inlet is in communication with a first tap water passage port, first and second purified water passage ports are blocked from communication with the purified water outlet, so purified water from the first filter flows backward through the second filter and is discharged from the drain water outlet.
Abstract:
A water reclamation system is composed of a high-capacity input pump connected to an ionizer, which dissociates solid or biological particles from the water. After leaving the ionizer, the fluid stream is run through staged filter systems progressively filtering the solids from the water, which is then fed to a reverse osmosis system for further filtration. Rejected water is diverted to a series of thermal units which cause the rejected water to flash into steam which is returned to the cleaned water stream of the reverse osmosis unit for discharge or further use; the remaining water, having the remaining solids and biological materials, is sent to a fracture unit where it is incinerated at an elevated temperature. The system is designed to provide parallel backups at each part of the process allowing cleaning to take place continuously while the other parallel system is operating.
