Abstract: An isolation valve particularly well suited for use in nuclear reactor hydraulic control systems is disclosed. The valve includes an electro-magnetic actuator which may be energized to open the valve thereby permitting the lift flow needed to move fission rate control devices with respect to a fuel assembly. The fission rate control devices are provided with elements comprised of magnetic material which, with the devices fully retracted from the fuel assembly, will be positioned within the magnetic field generated by the valve actuator whereby the devices will be magnetically held in the retracted position.

Abstract: A delay valve particularly well suited for use in nuclear reactor hydraulic control systems and a control method employing the valve are disclosed. The valve includes a bellows attached to a plug member and a high resistance flow path between a first pressure source and the interior of the bellows whereby a predetermined time is required for each filling of the bellows and the accompanying movement of the plug member in a first direction. Fission rate control devices are positioned in response to delay valve operation which is controlled by the application of pressure from second and third sources to the exterior of the bellows in the proper sequence.

Abstract: A rotary kiln in which oil and water can be removed from the metal chips in which a burner having outlets positioned throughout the length of the kiln introduces heat. The fuel to air ratio is adjusted such that no excess air is available in the kiln for combusting the oil coating on the chips. Thus the chips are subject to pyrolization in a reducing atmosphere, with the water and oil being vaporized and removed from the kiln along with the combustion exhaust gases.

Abstract: An emergency core coolant system for cooling the nuclear core of a nuclear reactor. A storage tank having a supply of coolant fluid therein is positioned outside of the reactor vessel and communicates through conduit means to an inactive plenum within the reactor vessel. Two distribution means are provided within the reactor vessel to flow couple the inactive plenum to the nuclear core, the two distribution means communicating with the inactive plenum at two different vertical elevations. Normally closed valve means is interposed in the conduit means and is operable to be opened in the event of an emergency to introduce coolant fluid in the tank means into the inactive plenum. The coolant fluid in the inactive plenum is then distributed to the nuclear core by the two distribution means.

Abstract: An ultrasonic transducer for use in a high temperature environment comprises a support frame supporting a crystal holder in turn supporting a piezoelectric crystal. Biasing means urge said crystal into non-rigid supported relationship with the crystal holder. The crystal surface facing the holder is electrically conductive and an electrically insulating material resistant to high temperatures is located between the crystal and the holder to maintain electrical isolation therebetween. The crystal holder may be movable relative to the support frame to permit extending or withdrawing the crystal into or from an operative position and to allow the crystal orientation to be angularly varied relative to at least a part of the support frame.

Abstract: Means for laterally supporting a nuclear steam generator against the effect of seismic loadings or other shock loadings imparted by external or internal causes are disclosed. Support is provided by means of a stiffening structure incorporating a shock suppressor apparatus which operates through the lever arm of a mechanical linkage. Abstract: The invention provides a hold-down device which maintains a net downward force on a fuel assembly in a nuclear reactor under all thermal and hydraulic conditions in the reactor core region. The hold-down device is particularly applicable in reactors having stainless steel support barrels and Zircaloy guide tubes. The hold-down device of the preferred embodiment of the invention is comprised of coil springs coaxially disposed about alignment posts which extend upwardly from the top end plate of each fuel assembly. A hold-down plate is slideably mounted on the alignment posts and the coil springs are interposed, in compression, between the hold-down plate and the top end plate. In use, the coil springs bias the hold-down plate upwardly against a core alignment plate to provide a downward force on the fuel assembly. The hold-down plate may also serve as a lifting surface for the fuel assembly during fuel handling.
