A method of treatment of waste material includes the steps of mixing the waste material with binder and pelletizing the mixture. The pellets are then coated with a non-agglomerating material selected to permit firing of the mixture without pellet agglomeration at a temperature above 1300.degree. C. The coated pellets are fed to a kiln and fired at a temperature above 1300.degree. C. before being discharged from the kiln. At least some of the heat of firing the pellets is recovered and recycled to the kiln.

Each calcination chamber has an inlet at its elevated end for receiving a supply of raw material to be calcined inside the calcination chamber, an opening at its lowermost end communicating with the outlet of the combustion chamber for receiving high-temperature combustion gases from the interior of the combustion chamber, and an outlet adjacent its lowermost end from which the calcined raw material drops for further calcination and/or collection without contacting the residue from the combustion chamber. Calcination in the calcination chambers is effected by heat transmitted from the combustion chamber through the kiln body and by heat given off by the high-temperature gases received from the combustion chamber.

At least one seal assembly is arranged between the stationary heated gas collecting chambers and the drum. A seal disc is provided on the circumferential wall of a hollow connection member at the end face of the drum at the inlet side and, respectively, at the outlet side for pyrolysis residues and/or another rotating part of the drum. At the two end faces of the seal disc are arranged contact rings which are slid with play over the connection member and/or the other rotating part and these sealingly contact such end faces. The contact rings are respectively provided on their circumference with seals which act between them and a surrounding housing part.

The rotary furnace has a generally cylindrical rotatable outer member that is driven by a belt and pulley arrangement. An inner member that defines the confines of the heating chamber is freely supported on the outer member to permit free expansion and contraction of the inner member with respect to the outer member. Insulating material disposed between the inner and outer members also joins the inner and outer members together during rotation of the outer member. The insulating material thus transmits the driving force from the outer member to the inner member to thereby cause rotation of the inner member. A cantilevered, non-rotatable heat supply structure extends into the inner member from one end thereof. An access opening to the heating chamber, that is normally sealed during furnace operation, is provided at the opposite end of the inner member. The furnace is pivotally-supported on a frame to permit movement of the furnace to a position wherein the access opening of the furnace is directed downwardly, thereby permitting quick and easy emptying of the furnace contents. The furnace is also loaded through the access opening prior to the heat-treating operation. The frame is supported on wheels for portability of the rotary furnace.

Furnace apparatus and method, for the continuous electric heating or fusion of particulate mineral-bearing substances, wherein a cylindrical furnace housing is adapted to trunnion bearing, the housing having at least one detachable and elongated conical extension at ends for dumping, the extensions likewise having electrode openings which are coaxially aligned with the housing, whereby a charge of the mineral-bearing substance may be introduced either during fusion or heating or roasting or firing, thus permitting partial filling of the furnace housing and sequential build-up, protecting the respective ends of the furnace against dead space and excessive charge recycle. By virtue of design, the conical ends are shielded against burning out by unbearable heat generated from the electrode arc. Inherent advantages occur by highly accelerated rotation, yielding resultant centrifugal forces which are applied to the charge.
