Abstract:
A shelf wedge can be used to display products. The shelf wedge can have an adjustable length which can be selectively established by moving a base section relative to a back section, for example by sliding the base section on projections extending from the body of the back section. A method of displaying products is also provided.
Abstract:
The invention provides methods for diagnosing chronic valvular disease in an animal. The methods comprise obtaining a sample from the animal; analyzing the sample for an amount of a microRNA (miRNA) associated with chronic valvular disease; comparing the amount of the miRNA identified in the sample to a corresponding amount of the miRNA present in a sample from one or more comparable control animals that do not suffer from chronic valvular disease; and diagnosing the animal with chronic valvular disease if the amount of the miRNA found in the animal's sample is differentially expressed in the control animal's sample.
Abstract:
Meat emulsion products are produced that have a high meat content, for example more than 15 wt %, and also realistic fiber definition, for example linear strands of fiber-like material providing a realistic meat-like appearance. Such meat emulsion products can be made from a viscous dough containing one or more meat meals and humectants, the dough having a low moisture content, such as about 32% or less. Preferably the one or more meat meals are the only meat in the dough. The dough can be emulsified and then set in a high pressure heat exchanger, such as a heat exchanger formed by a first plate and a second plate that form a passage therebetween. The set meat emulsion can be re-sized to form diced chunks of the meat emulsion product. The diced chunks can be cooled and may be blended with a gravy or kibbles or packaged alone.
Abstract:
A system, a feeding device, and a method enable a terminal device of a pet owner to directly and/or indirectly communicate with the feeding device. The feeding device can monitor and/or feed the pet. For example, components of the feeding device, along with a sensor worn by the pet and in communication with the feeding device, can monitor the pet. A cloud database may compile and may perform an analysis of health and wellness information and food consumption data sent from the feeding device and may communicate with the terminal device of the pet owner bidirectionally. The analysis can use data from a consumer-club of pets to provide best service. The feeding device can also communicate with the terminal device of the pet owner bidirectionally, either directly using one or more wireless connections or indirectly using the cloud database.
Abstract:
Edible chews for pets have a low density (e.g. about 1.0 Kg/L or less) and a smooth exterior surface. One method by which the low density and the smooth exterior surface can be achieved uses a modified extrusion die to increase shear and restrict surface bubbles. Another method by which the low density and the smooth exterior surface can be achieved uses an extruder screw with a modified profile that holds a dough longer therein to create a whipping effect resulting in more bubble nucleation sites and hence a more uniform cellular matrix. The puffed (expanded) product was experimentally tested and provided better dental cleaning scores than a current unexpanded similarly formulated commercial dental product.
Abstract:
Non-meat food products are provided that have the appearance and the texture of cooked meat. Methods for making such non-meat food products are also provided. In an embodiment, a method includes mixing dry ingredients comprising vegetable proteins with wet ingredients including water and/or oil to form a non-meat dough; heating the non-meat dough under pressure; maintaining the pressure while transferring the heated non-meat dough to a cooling device; and gradually cooling the heated non-meat dough while gradually decreasing pressure on the heated non-meat dough, to form a non-meat food product. The mixing can be performed by a batch or continuous mixer; the heating can be performed by a device selected from the group consisting of a high shear emulsifier, a heat exchanger, and a dielectric heater; and the gradual cooling can be performed by a heat exchanger.
Abstract:
The invention provides animal play toys that engage an animal in play before and during consumption of a treat. In one aspect, the invention provides an animal play toy having a top portion defining at least one hole therethrough and a weighted bottom portion. The animal play toy is able to stand upright when there is no interaction with the animal play toy. One or more ropes of a consumable product or a non-consumable product can be attached to the top portion of the animal play toy through the hole.
Abstract:
The invention provides methods for reducing absorption of carbohydrates in a companion animal, comprising identifying the companion animal having a health condition or at risk for the health condition associated with high carbohydrate ingestion and feeding a dietary formulation in a therapeutically effective amount to the companion animal. Such dietary formulations can be any of those as described herein. Generally, the dietary formulation can comprise 20% to 60% protein, 10% to 40% fat, 10% to 50% carbohydrates, and 0.01% to 5% alpha-amylase inhibitor. Typically, the therapeutically effective amount can be effective for reducing absorption of carbohydrates in the companion animal as measured by lowering the postprandial blood glucose of the animal as compared to the postprandial blood glucose of the companion animal ingesting a comparable dietary formulation that excludes the alpha-amylase inhibitor.
Abstract:
A palatant composition can be derived from cocoa butter or a fat blend with a similar compositional profile and can be combined with a food composition to enhance the palatability of the food composition. Alternatively or additionally, a mixture of different fatty acids can be used. Mono-ethanolamine can be subjected to a heat treatment and an amidation reaction with the fat blend to make the palatant composition. The resultant palatant composition can be used with the food composition at a ppm level, for example 10-1000 ppm relative to the food composition. The palatant composition can also be delivered in a free-flowing, encapsulated form and packed in a sachet to use as supplement to main meals.
