    Abstract: Light weight composites with high flexural strength comprise epoxy foam sandwiched between two layers of facing material have high strength and low weight and can be used to replace steel structures. The facing layer may be fibrous material especially glass or carbon fibres, the facing material is preferably embedded into the epoxy matrix. Alternatively they may be matching box structures or concentric metal tubes. The sandwich structures may be prepared by laying up the fibre; coating and/or impregnating the layer with epoxy resin, laying a layer of heat activatable foamable epoxy material, providing a further layer of the fibrous material optionally coated and/or impregnated with epoxy resin on the foamable material and healing to foam and cure the epoxy materials. Alternatively they may be formed by extrusion of the foamable material between the surface layers.

    Abstract: Applying heat activatable adhesive to a substrate, the adhesive is solid at ambient temperature and can be melted at a temperature below its heat activation temperature wherein the adhesive formulation is supplied to a hot melt applicator where it is heated to above its melting point and below its activation temperature and the melt viscosity of the molten adhesive is controlled so that it can be ejected from the hot melt applicator onto a substrate to provide a coherent bead that adheres to the substrate and is dry to the touch on cooling and upon activation the adhesive is capable of expanding with a volume expansion greater than about 250%.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a potting paste composition for honeycomb reinforcement having improved fire retardancy characteristics. The potting paste composition comprises (a) a curable polymer; (b) a curing agent for the curable polymer; (c) a fire retardant comprising an ammonium polyphosphate in combination with an ingredient selected from the group consisting of metal hydroxides, expandable graphites, liquid phosphate esters, phosphorous organic compounds or salts thereof, and zeolites; and(d) a filler selected from the group consisting of polymeric microspheres, hollow glass microspheres, and thixotropic fillers; wherein the potting paste has an uncured density determined by the method according to EN ISO 1183 of not more than 0.7100 g/cm3, preferably of at most 0.680 g/cm3, more preferably of at most 0.673 g/cm3, still more preferably of at most 0.660 g/cm3, even more preferably of at most 0.658 g/cm3, yet more preferably of at most 0.653 g/cm3 and in particular of at most 0.620 g/cm3; and wherein the total content of the fire retardant is at least 5.0 wt.-%, preferably at least 10 wt.-%, more preferably at least 15 wt.-%, relative to the total weight of the potting paste composition.
