Abstract: A cycloidal reluctance machine includes a stator surrounding a rotor. Stator windings and rotor windings form respective concentric rotor and stator electromagnets. The rotor is eccentrically positioned with respect to the stator to move with two degrees of freedom (2DOF), including rotating motion about a rotary axis of the rotor and orbiting motion about a center axis of the stator. A rotor constraint mechanism (RCM) constrains motion of the rotor, such that the rotor is able to generate and transmit output torque to a coupled load in at least one of the 2DOF. A magnetic field polarity of stator poles and/or rotor poles of the respective stator and rotor changes over one electrical cycle of the polyphase voltage. The coupled load may be a drive axle of a vehicle in some embodiments. In others, the stator and rotor windings are driven via different power inverters.

Abstract: An electrical system includes an inverter connected to AC and DC voltage buses, a cycloidal electric machine connected to the PIM via the AC voltage bus, and a controller. The machine's rotor is eccentric with respect to the stator, an airgap between the stator and rotor is smaller at an instantaneous center of rotation of the rotor than elsewhere around a circumference of the rotor, and the rotor moves with two degrees of freedom (2DOF), i.e., rotating and orbiting motion. The controller receives a torque command, the rotor position signal, and the current signals, and in response identifies an optimal stator pole or pole pair located proximate the instantaneous center of rotation and energizes the optimal stator pole or pole pair via the PIM prior to energizing another stator pole or pole pair of the stator.

Abstract: Presented are slotted permanent magnets (PM) for electric machines, motor generator units using slotted PMs, methods for making/using slotted PMs, and motor vehicles equipped with an electric traction motor using slotted PMs. An electric machine includes an annular stator with a hollow core and one or more internal stator slots. One or more electrically conductive windings is/are disposed in the stator slot(s). A cylindrical rotor is rotatably disposed inside the hollow core of the stator. One or more permanent magnets is/are mounted to the rotor. Each permanent magnet includes a rigid, single-piece PM body with opposing first and second faces. A first set of elongated grooves is recessed into the first face. An optional second set of elongated grooves is recessed into the second face. Each of the grooves has a depth that is substantially parallel to a direction of a magnetic field generated by the permanent magnet.

Abstract: An electric motor includes a rotor having a stack of laminations positioned axially relative to one another. The stack of laminations includes a first rotor lamination that is divided into a first portion and a second portion. The first rotor lamination is configured to have an asymmetric mass distribution such that the first portion has a first mass and the second portion has a second mass, with the first mass being different from the second mass. The electric motor is configured to selectively generate an unbalanced force during operation (i.e., when the rotor is spinning). The electric motor may include a stator configured to have an asymmetric magnetic field distribution. The electric motor may be employed in a haptic assembly and eliminates the need for a separate eccentric mass to generate a haptic signal.

Abstract: A vehicle's electrified powertrain includes a battery pack linked to a traction power inverter module (TPIM) converting DC voltage from the battery pack into AC voltage. A rotary electric machine includes a stator energized by the TPIM's AC voltage, enclosing a rotor core capable of rotation. The rotor core contains slots holding conductive bars and permanent magnets, with conductive bars positioned closer to the rotor core's center. The conductive bars and permanent magnets are separated by gaps within each slot. An annular end ring assembly is present at one end of the rotor core, featuring terminal conductors connected to subsets of conductive bars and a secondary coil of a rotary transformer. When the stator is energized, the rotor shaft, connected to the rotor, rotates. The electric machine powers a transmission, which is coupled to the rotor shaft.

The method also includes, based on the output torque and the vehicle speed indicating a low motor efficiency condition, modulating the drive signal between a first torque value and a second torque value that is less than the first torque value, the first torque value greater than the commanded torque and selected to increase an efficiency of the electric motor.

Abstract: A vehicle, suspension system and method of dampening a force on the suspension system is disclosed. The suspension system includes a damper having a first damping element and a second damping element configured to rotate relative to each other in response to a force received at the suspension system. The second damping element induces an eddy current in the first damping element during relative rotation. A feature of one at least one of the first damping element and the second damping element provides a first electrical resistance to the eddy current during relative rotation in a first direction and a second electrical resistance to the eddy current during relative rotation in a second direction. The first electrical resistance generates a first damping force and the second electrical resistance generates a second damping force.
