    Abstract: A joint for a composite frame includes a first composite rod, a first shell abutting the first composite rod, a second shell abutting the first composite rod and disposed opposite the first shell relative to the first composite rod. The first and second shells are joined together such that composite rod is fixed therebetween. A method of forming joints of composite frame includes forming a composite frame by interconnecting a plurality of composite rods formed by an Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) manufacturing method around a mandrel, applying a first shell to the plurality of composite rods at a first location where composite rods are interconnected, applying a second shell at the first location opposite the first shell relative to the composite rods, and joining the first and second shells together with the composite rods at the first location disposed between the first and second shells.

    Abstract: An aircraft drive shaft including an outer shaft having a first diameter configured to couple a first gearbox and a second gearbox to provide power transfer between the two gearboxes, an inner shaft concentric with the outer shaft and having a second diameter configured to provide structural support to the outer shaft, a gap defined between an outer peripheral surface of the inner shaft and an inner peripheral surface of the outer shaft, wherein the gap is sized according to a ballistic projectile cross-section size that the aircraft is considered to encounter on an upcoming mission, and a sleeve located at least at first end of the outer shaft connecting the outer shaft to the inner shaft.

    Abstract: A composite tube may include a body having a longitudinal centerline axis and an end portion having a tapered section and an end rim. At least one of a radially outward edge and a radially inward edge of the end rim may be non-circular. The end rim may be circumferentially continuous, and the tapered section may diverge radially outward in a direction from the body to the end rim. A joint assembly may include a support wedge that at least partially engages at least one of a radially inward surface of the end portion and a radially outward surface of the end portion of the composite tube.

    Abstract: A metallic/composite joint may comprise a composite member extending along a centerline axis and a metallic member. The composite member may comprise a cylinder having a flared end. An outer surface of the flared end may be oriented at a first angle relative to the centerline axis. An inner surface of the metallic member may be oriented at a second angle relative to the centerline axis. The inner surface of the metallic member and the outer surface of the composite member may be separated by a first gap at a first location and may be separated by a second gap at a second location.In various embodiments, the composite member may comprise a cylinder having an angled end, an inner surface of the angled end oriented at the first angle and an insert having an outer surface oriented at the second angle.
