    摘要: A process of depositing a coating system suitable for use as an environmental barrier coating on various substrate materials, particularly those containing silicon and intended for high temperature applications such as the hostile thermal environment of a gas turbine engine. The process comprises depositing a first coating layer containing mullite, and preferably a second coating layer of an alkaline earth aluminosilicate, such as barium-strontium-aluminosilicate (BSAS), by thermal spraying while maintaining the substrate at a temperature of 800° C. or less, preferably 500° C. or less, by which a substantially crack-free coating system is produced with desirable mechanical integrity.

    摘要: An article having a spallation resistant TBC comprises a metal substrate, such as a high temperature superalloy, and a TBC, such as a coating of yttria stabilized zirconia. The TBC comprises a plurality of plasma-sprayed layers. The TBC has a coherent, continuous columnar grain microstructure, wherein at least one layer has a plurality of continuous columnar grains which have been extended by directional solidification into an adjacent layer. In a preferred embodiment, the coherent, continuous columnar microstructure comprises substantially all of the volume of TBC. A coherent, continuous columnar grain microstructure is also taught wherein at least some of the plurality of coherent, continuous columnar grains which comprise a TBC extend through essentially the entire thickness of the coating. A columnar crack pattern of cracks extending generally normal to the surface of the metal substrate is also developed within TBCs of the present invention in conjunction with the coherent, continuous columnar grain microstructures described.

    摘要: Different plasma spray guns have differing current and voltage requirements for their operation. The spray guns generally fall into low voltage high current and high voltage low current types. The power requirements of the guns vary greatly in terms of overall power ranging from few tens of kilowatts to few hundreds of kilowatts. The guns also have wide ranging requirements for voltage and current. A power delivery unit is described in which the unit is capable of delivering the wide range of power as well as the wide ranges of voltage and current. A plasma spray system with such power delivery unit can universally operate both the low voltage high current and high voltage low voltage spray gun types. Such system can reduce capital and operation costs since shops need not maintain separate and incompatible plasma spray systems.

    摘要: Combinatorial high throughput screening is used to rapidly investigate and screen a multiplicity of complex thermal barrier coating candidates. In the screening method, a solution of thermal barrier coating precursors is formed and injected into a plasma jet of an air plasma spray (APS). The plasma jet is directed toward a substrate to deposit a gradient film formed from the precursors onto the substrate. An APS torch system comprises an APS torch, solution precursor vessels connected to the torch through a mixing zone and injector, a substrate oriented with respect to the torch to receive a plasma spray film formed from solution precursors from the vessels and a controller. The controller is connected to the solution precursor vessels and the torch or substrate to control mixing of the solution precursors and to control orientation of the torch or substrate to deposit a gradient film onto the substrate from the plasma spray. A CHTS array comprises a substrate and a gradient film of candidate TBC materials deposited over the substrate.
