摘要:
A glass molding system and a method of making glass articles using the glass molding system are disclosed. The glass molding system includes an indexing table, a plurality of enclosures arranged along the indexing table, and a plurality of stations defined on the indexing table such that each of the stations is selectively indexable with any one of the enclosures. At least one radiant heater is arranged in at least one of the enclosures. A radiation reflector surface and a radiation emitter body are arranged in the at least one of the enclosures. The radiation emitter body is between the at least one radiant heater and the radiation reflector surface and has a first surface in opposing relation to the at least one radiant heater and a second surface in opposing relation to the radiation reflector surface.

A method of making a 3D glass article includes forming at least one marker on an edge of a 2D glass piece. The 2D glass piece is thermally reformed into a 3D glass article, where the at least one marker formed on the edge of the 2D glass piece is carried over to an edge of the 3D glass article. The 3D glass article is aligned on a support using the at least one marker on the edge of the 3D glass article. Then, the edge of the 3D glass article is finished to a final shape and dimension.

A glass sheet is placed on a mold and heated to a first temperature. The glass sheet is then formed into a glass article having a three-dimensional shape using the mold. An isothermal heat transfer device comprising at least one heat pipe is provided in thermal contact with the mold. With the glass article on the mold and the isothermal heat transfer device in thermal contact with the mold, the glass article, mold, and isothermal heat transfer device are transported along a thermally-graded channel to cool the glass article to a second temperature. During the transporting, the isothermal heat transfer device transfers heat from a relatively hot region of the mold to a relatively cold region of the mold.

A substrate with a patterned opaque coating formable into an opaque aperture in one process is provided. The opaque coating includes at least a bottom layer and a top layer. The bottom and top layers each include a material selected from the group consisting of chrome and chrome oxide. The top layer has a compressive stress, which makes the opaque coating more resistant to pinhole formation during downstream processing.

An apparatus for conducting a fusion process on a fiber includes a fiber chamber having coupled thereto a first fiber holder having a groove through which a fiber can be inserted into the fiber chamber and suspended therein, a filament chamber which maintains an inert and/or reducing atmosphere, a resistive filament movably supported in the filament chamber, a partition adjoining the fiber chamber and the filament chamber, the partition being provided with an orifice, a valve which selectively opens and closes the orifice, and a positioning device which moves the resistive filament between the filament chamber and the fiber chamber when the valve opens the orifice.

Disclosed are optical resonators having low OH content in at least the near-surface region and a process for making low OH glass article by chlorine treatment of consolidated glass of the article. Cl2 gas was used to remove OH from depth as deep as 350 μm from the surface of the consolidated glass. The process can be used for treating flame-polished preformed optical resonator disks. A new process involving hot pressing or thermal reflowing for making planar optical resonator disks without the use of flame polishing is also disclosed.

A tapered lensed fiber includes a tapered multimode fiber having a gradient-index core and an optical fiber attached to the tapered multimode fiber. A method for forming a tapered lensed fiber includes attaching an optical fiber to a multimode fiber having a gradient-index core, applying heat to a surface of the multimode fiber, and pulling the multimode fiber into a taper. The method also allows for forming a tapered polarization-maintaining fiber while preserving stress rods and polarization isolation properties of the polarization-maintaining fiber.

A sol-gel method of preparing a powder for use in forming a glass is provided, along with methods of preparing glasses and glass fibers from the powder. The inventive method allows for the incorporation of a wide range of elements and compositions into a homogeneous glass or glass fiber that is substantially free of hydroxide groups. In addition, dopants incorporated into glasses prepared by the inventive method are uniformly distributed throughout the glass structure.
