The thermosetting latex comprises a blocked isocyanate curing agent and a cationic acrylic latex which is prepared by copolymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomers, at least one of which contains an active hydrogen group, in an acidic medium in the presence of a cationic surfactant, of which the gegen-ion is derived from certain phosphorous-containing acids. Such latices, when formulated into coating compositions, provide corrosion-resistant coatings.

Each of (1), (2), (3) and (4) are different one from the other and at least one of (3) and (4) is present in the monomeric composition. Multi-layer composite coatings and coated substrates also are provided.

Cured thermoset multilayered composite coatings with a powder clear coat and a waterborne base coat have improved chip resistance for the coating. The waterborne base coat composition has one or more crosslinkable film-forming polymers, one or more crosslinking agents for crosslinking the film-forming polymer, and one or more pigments. This basecoat is applied to a bare or previously painted substrate to give a film thickness in the range of about 0.1 to 3 mils (2.54 to 76.2 microns). The basecoat is dehydrated from treatment at a temperature from ambient to an elevated temperature of up to about 90.degree. C. for up to about 15 minutes before it is contacted with powder clear coating composition. The powder clear coating composition has a predominant amount of one or more crosslinkable, meltable and mobile film-forming polymer and/or copolymer having a weight average molecular weight of one or polymers/copolymers in the range of about 2000 to about 6000. The film-forming polymer or copolymer has an amount of functionality for crosslinking of at least 40 weight percent of the total resin solids for the polymers. The glass transition temperature for the powder coating composition is at least about 25.degree. C. The powder coating composition for the clear coat also has one or more crosslinking agents and when cured has a film thickness in the range of about 35 to about 100 microns. The basecoat and clear coat are co-cured. Optionally, one or more primer coats may be beneath the basecoat.

The invention provides non-gelled polymers containing integral isocyanato groups, which can be formulated into coating compositions. The polymers are derived preferably from polymerizable, ethylenically unsaturated blocked mono-isocyanato group-containing monomer, hydroxyl group-containing monomer and an amino group-containing monomer and/or carboxyl group-containing monomer. The coating compositions, particularly the electrodepositable compositions of this invention, possess excellent properties of wet appearance, substrate adhesion, hardness, chemical resistance and glossy appearance.

A color-plus-clear coating system is disclosed. A pigmented or colored base coat is first applied to a substrate followed by the application of a transparent top coat to the base coat. The transparent top coat composition is a liquid crosslinkable composition comprising a polyepoxide and a polyacid curing agent. The polyepoxide-polyacid curing agent in the transparent top coat provides a composite coating with outstanding gloss and distinctness of image making the composite coating particularly useful as an automotive top coat.

Ungelled, stable aqueous dispersions of acrylic polymers, containing carboxyl and epoxy functionality, and their method of preparation are disclosed. The dispersions are useful in water-based coating compositions. As long as the polymeric product remains dispersed in aqueous medium, stable, curable, one-package coating compositions result. However, when the dispersions are applied to a substrate as a film and the water evaporated, a curing reaction occurs as evidenced by the film becoming harder and more solvent resistant with the passage of time.
