Disclosed is a coating formed from a composition containing a film-forming resin and a plurality of particles dispersed in the resin. The average particle size of the particles is 0.1 to 50 microns, and the particles have a hardness sufficient to impart greater mar and/or scratch resistance to the coating as compared to a coating where no particles are present. Also, the difference between the refractive ranges from 1 to 1.5. A method for preparing a powder coating including the particles also is provided.

A multi-component composite coating composition is provided which includes a pigmented base coat and a transparent topcoat composition applied over the base coat. The transparent topcoat is deposited from a substantially solvent free film-forming composition which includes a thermosettable dispersion of polymeric microparticles having functionality adapted to react with a crosslinking agent and a hydrophilic crosslinking agent reactive with the functionality of the microparticles. The microparticles are prepared from one or more reaction products of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, one or more hydrophobic polymers and one or more hydrophobic crosslinking agents. Pigmented film-forming compositions as well as curable compositions containing the above-described dispersions also are provided. A method of forming the dispersion of polymeric microparticles is provided. The substantially solvent-free film-forming compositions of the invention are storage stable at room temperature and provide coatings with excellent application properties such as sag resistance and tack-free overspray, and excellent performance properties such as chip resistance and adhesion. The film-forming compositions are suitable for wet-on-wet application over a base coat with little or no mudcracking.

A thermosetting composition comprising a co-reactable solid, particulate mixture of (a) polycarboxylic acid functional polymer, and (b) epoxide functional crosslinking agent having at least two epoxide groups, e.g., triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC), is described. The polycarboxylic acid functional polymer is prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization and has well defined polymer chain architecture and polydispersity index of less than 2.0. The thermosetting compositions of the present invention have utility as powder coatings compositions.

Cured thermoset multilayered composite coatings with a powder clear coat and a waterborne base coat have improved chip resistance for the coating. The waterborne base coat composition has one or more crosslinkable film-forming polymers, one or more crosslinking agents for crosslinking the film-forming polymer, and one or more pigments. This basecoat is applied to a bare or previously painted substrate to give a film thickness in the range of about 0.1 to 3 mils (2.54 to 76.2 microns). The basecoat is dehydrated from treatment at a temperature from ambient to an elevated temperature of up to about 90.degree. C. for up to about 15 minutes before it is contacted with powder clear coating composition. The powder clear coating composition has a predominant amount of one or more crosslinkable, meltable and mobile film-forming polymer and/or copolymer having a weight average molecular weight of one or polymers/copolymers in the range of about 2000 to about 6000. The film-forming polymer or copolymer has an amount of functionality for crosslinking of at least 40 weight percent of the total resin solids for the polymers. The glass transition temperature for the powder coating composition is at least about 25.degree. C. The powder coating composition for the clear coat also has one or more crosslinking agents and when cured has a film thickness in the range of about 35 to about 100 microns. The basecoat and clear coat are co-cured. Optionally, one or more primer coats may be beneath the basecoat.

Compositions are provided which contain (a) one or more polysiloxanes comprising at least one reactive functional group; a plurality of particles; and, optionally, one or more curing agents comprising at least one functional group that is reactive with any reactive functional group of polysiloxane (a). Additionally, a process for applying the multi-component composite coatings described above to a substrate and coated substrates are provided. A process for preparing the coating compositions also is provided. The multi-component composite coating compositions of the invention provide highly scratch resistant color-plus-clearcoatings capable of retaining scratch resistance after weathering.
